Chairman of the opposition People’s National Party (PNP), Robert Pickersgill, yesterday said a motorcar he sold to former junior minister Kern Spencer and Spencer’s former executive assistant, Colleen Wright, is now part of the probe into the Cuban light bulb scandal.
Pickersgill said he would be talking to the police about the matter.
The 2003 Toyota Crown motorcar entered the picture after investigators probing the light bulb scandal found a cheque drawn in Pickersgill’s name for $2 million. The investigators seized the cheque, along with other documents. Pickersgill said Spencer approached him in October last year and offered to buy the car. Pickersgill said a sale agreement was written and Wright gave him a cheque, which was honoured by the National Commercial Bank (NCB) Santa Cruz branch on October 8. This was before the Cuban light bulb scandal broke on October 23.
Pickersgill said at the time of the transaction, he knew nothing about the light bulb issue.
Spencer is facing multiple charges ranging from fraud to money laundering, while Wright was charged for conspiracy to defraud and corruption. They are both out on bail.
