Today's 35th staging of the Gibson Relays will be the first to be held on the new surface at the National Stadium, and track and field fans can expect very fierce competition, especially among the high schools, with just over two weeks to go before the Grace Kennedy/ISSA Boys and Girls' Championships. The top schools are expected to parade their best talent as they seek to gain the psychological edge in relay events ahead of the Champs 101.
Today, we look at the possible top three finishers in some selected events for high school boys and girls.
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS EVENTS
CLASS FOUR 4x100m
Unlike last year where St Jago High and Edwin Allen High were heads and shoulders above their opponents, this time around it is more competitive. Four teams - Edwin Allen, St Elizabeth Technical, St Andrew High and a vastly improved Excelsior High - are evenly matched as they have all clocked low 49 seconds so far.
After a second-place finish last year at the meet, Edwin Allen, who got the better of St Elizabeth Technical at the Western Relays in a close affair where they clocked 49.12 to their opponents' 49.12 seconds, are given the edge to continue their winning ways. However, the Corporate Area's top two should not be taken lightly as both clocked 49.47 seconds to win their heats easily at the Camperdown Classics.
Watch St Andrew High with the outstanding Rushelle Burton in their line-up.
1. Edwin Allen High
2. St Elizabeth Technical
3. St Andrew High
CLASS THREE 4x100m
No stopping Holmwood Technical. A very powerful team which includes the likes of Dianai Johnson, Yanique Thompson, and Sashana Forbes. The Western Relays winners who set a record 46.52 seconds are well set to retain their title and will be hoping for a sub-46 seconds here. Edwin Allen quartet, which includes the likes of Sequina Cameron and Shanice Lewis, looks second best on paper but could pull off a surprise win.
1. Holmwood Technical
2. Edwin Allen
3. Wolmer's Girls
CLASS TWO 4x100m
Despite posting a record run of 45.32 seconds to win at the Western Relays, this will be a different affair for Edwin Allen as the outstanding Christian Williams, the anchor leg on that team, cannot compete today as she only transferred to that institution last September from Oracabessa High, and the Relays' rules make her ineligible. Without Williams it will be a hard task for the Michael Dyke team to win here, as they will have to deal with a Vere Technical team which includes Shericka Jackson and Satima Chambers, the Central Champs winners in the event.
1. Vere Technical
2. Holmwood
3. St Elizabeth
CLASS ONE 4x100m
Any number can play here as this is one of the weakest batch of Class One athletes in many years. There are no outstanding individual or teams around. This looks a battle, however, among Herbert Morrison, Holmwood and Edwin Allen. All three coaches of the top teams are predicting victory here, but while Milo Western Relays winners Herbert Morrison with World Junior representative Seidath Palmer in their line-up will be the favourites, both Holmwood and Edwin Allen will be hoping to go all the way. Edwin Allen, with three members from last year's Penn Relays squad which clocked a sub-46 seconds, could avenge their Western Relays defeat where after leading for three legs, they were caught close home. A very close call but the experience of Edwin Allen should prevail.
1. Edwin Allen
2. Herbert Morrison
3. Holmwood
4x200m OPEN
With the three top teams focusing on the 4x400 metres, Herbert Morrison are expected to take advantage of this and triumph here.
1. Herbert Morrison
2. Holmwood
3. Edwin Allen
4x400m OPEN
A cracker here as Vere Technical, Holmwood and Edwin Allen should set the place on 'fire' in what is expected to be the event of the meet among female athletes, as all three teams have been impressive so far and new champions will be crowned following the awesome performance of the outstanding Bickle team from the USA last year. All three teams are loaded with some of the country's best schoolgirl 400m runners and the winners could come down to the tactics of the coaches.
Holmwood's team will include two 'monsters' in Chris-Ann Gordon and Janieve Russell, who were members of Jamaica's bronze medal-winning team at World Juniors last year. Edwin Allen will have the dangerous Ristananna Tracy and the vastly improved Dezrine Montique, while Vere Technical look the most rounded with the likes of Shericka Jackson, Chantal Duncan, Olivia James and young Class Three star Yanique McNeil, who ran a cracker at Central Championships on the anchor leg. Edwin Allen, with their 3:40.62 win at Western Relays, are the leaders but Vere, with their 3:41.65 win on the same day at the Camperdown Classics, did really well and are favoured to break a long drought at the Gibson Relays and take home the top prize.
1. Vere
2. Holmwood
3. Edwin Allen
4x800m OPEN
Edwin Allen are the only unbeaten team in the event this season and have gone under eight minutes once. They were the best local team at the meet last year but had to settle for second behind the star-studded Bickle team which broke the record and will want to make up for that defeat, and should do so in style as their 400m runners have looked in tip-top form this season.
1. Edwin Allen
2. Holmwood
3. St Jago
BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL EVENTS
CLASS FOUR 4x100m
A good testing ground for these young ones. It should be a battle among the usual top teams in the event, with Western Relays winners Kingston College getting the edge.
1. Kingston College
2. Wolmer's Boys
3. St Jago High
CLASS THREE 4x100m
As long as the stick goes around the track successfully the David Riley-coached Wolmer's Boys will not lose this event. Blessed with the most outstanding Class Three athletes in the island, which includes the likes of Jordan James, Karey Kelly and Jaheel Hyde, Wolmer's should erase Jamaica College's one-year-old 43.42-seconds record.
1. Wolmer's Boys
2. Calabar High
3. Jamaica College
CLASS TWO 4x100m
After a commanding lead at the Camperdown Classics, Jamaica College had a major hiccup on the final exchange, where they botched their baton change. They will be hoping to send a strong message to their rivals just before 'Champs'. With the likes of Edward Clarke, Rohan Walker, Tyler Mason and the outstanding Deshawn Jackson in their line-up, they should have a Saturday evening stroll.
1. Jamaica College
2. St Jago
3. Calabar
CLASS ONE 4x100m
A fit Wolmer's team would have had a walkover here, but with top star Odean Skeen not down to compete due to an injury, coach David Riley will not want to take the chance in running his top man at the meet, with the Carifta Trials and Boys and Girls' Championships so close. The Wolmer's team still has a lot of depth as the likes of Ashani Mitchell, Ramone Bailey and Julian Forte still make them a formidable squad, but they will have to deal with two rural teams in St Elizabeth Technical and Munro College, who are very hot at the moment.
Both rural teams had a close battle at Western Relays, where St Elizabeth came out on top by two-hundredths of a second as they clocked a record 40.12 seconds for the win, just ahead of their opponents in 40.14.
1. St Elizabeth
2. Munro
3. Wolmer's Boys'
4x400m OPEN
Several weeks ago, Munro were the hot favourites to take home the top prize following their outstanding display at the Central Hurdles and Relay Meet at G.C. Foster College, where they clocked a season-leading time of 3:14.61. However, a slight injury to Keneil Harrison has affected their winning chances, and they will have to do something extra special if they hope to win their first title in this event in a long while.
Kingston College and St Jago High, two of the most successful teams in the event for the past four seasons, should now decide the event. The North Street-based Kingston College has been strengthened with some new athletes who have been transferred from other schools, and after seeing the performances of their 400m runners at the UWI Invitational Meet a week ago, they are well set to return to winning ways in the event. The Mervyn Green-led St Jago should not be taken lightly, however.
1. Kingston College
2. St Jago
3. Munro
4x800m OPEN
In an interview a few days ago, Edward Hector, coach of Holmwood Technical, boasted that they owned this event.
Undoubtedly, they have been the most dominant team here over the years, but later today they could see their dominance in the event coming to an end by Jamaica College, St Jago or Kingston College.
Jamaica College get the nod as they have looked the most dangerous team. They have recorded the fastest time so far this season when they clocked 7:49.37 to finish second behind G.C. Foster College at the G.C. Foster Classics last month. Their quartet, which is expected to include the likes of Earl Grant, Waquar DaCosta, Ramone Headman and Avon Lee, is expected to leave Holmwood in their tracks.
1. Jamaica College
2. Holmwood
3. St Jago
