Japan is seeking to join a trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), to further increase auto exports to the United States without fully opening the Japanese market to U.S. auto exports. Please ask our elected leaders to oppose a one-sided trade deal with Japan.
"Background:
The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a trade negotiation involving the United States and ten other Asia-Pacific countries committed to free and open trade. The TPP will deliver real benefits, but I am in opposition to the addition of Japan due to its protectionist economy. On August 21, 2012, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) issued a new economic analysis that shows the negative impact on American auto jobs if Japan joins the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) - Link to analysis:
Important facts to consider:
· For every one American car that is exported to Japan, 150 Japanese cars are shipped to the U.S.
· Japan is the most closed auto market in the world – all foreign automakers combined account for less than 5% of total sales in Japan.
· The vast majority of the U.S. trade deficit with Japan is in vehicles and auto parts.
· The Japanese government manages its currency to unfairly lower the price of the cars exported to the United States and markets around the world.
· A trade agreement with Japan will outsource more North American auto jobs.
North America can compete and win with a level playing field. But adding Japan to TPP would only lock in one-way, unfair trade."
