Jamaica is increasing its push for the Blue and John Crow Mountain National Park to be included on the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites selected by UNESCO.
The Park was placed on the tentative list in 2006 and today several public and private sector entities signed a proposal for the area to be added to the 878 sites around the world already included on the list.
In outlining the reasons for the proposal Culture Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange noted that Blue and John Crow Mountain National Park is the largest contiguous area of natural or broadleaf forest in Jamaica.
Located in the east of the island the Park protects 193 acres of forest on mountain slopes comprising ten watershed management units and four parishes.
The list of World Heritage Sites already includes the Great Wall of China, Old Havana in Cuba, Yellowstone National Park in the United States and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
