JLP Asks: Were 300 More Mexicans Given Jamaican Work Permits?
The Opposition is calling for the Labour Ministry to say whether there is any truth to reports that 300 more Mexican workers are to arrive in the island to work on a hotel project in St Ann.
In a statement last week, Labour Minister, Derrick Kellier, said 110 Mexicans have been given permits to work as 'specialist finishers' to help the Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Hotel meet its April deadline for opening.
The statement said 180 permits were applied for.
However, the opposition spokesman on Labour, Pearnel Charles, says the hotel's management advised at a meeting that permits have been given for an additional 300 Mexicans to be brought into the island.
He says Kellier must clarify whether they are taking the place of Jamaicans who are unemployed and who are skilled to do the jobs.

Charles says he knows that there are principles guiding how work permits are issued.
However, he says workers are threatening to rebel in the absence of a suitable explanation.

Work has already been disrupted at the site of the former Sunset Jamaica Grande over payment of wages.
The Labour Ministry says about 2,000 Jamaicans are employed at various levels of the renovation exercise currently underway.
On completion, the Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Hotel is expected to provide employment for approximately 1,200 Jamaicans.
