Re: Jitterbug
I've been to Mexico about 5 times. 3 times in Cancun back in my early 20's, 1 time in Cozumel, and 1 time in Playa del Carmen about 3 years ago. I have to say the beach in Playa del Carmen is so beautiful. I too stayed in a moderate priced all inclusive. The food absolutely sucked, the Mexican people were friendly but not over the top. I think they had been taught to not be too friendly with the guests. Shopping in the mid 80's in the Cancun market was totally fun and cheap (I've still got some of the beautiful clay pottery that I bought). The market is prob. mashed up by now. The first time to Mexico I was about 20 and I lost my $$ and passport and got deathly ill & Was hospitalized for food poisioning........my girlfriend got TB in Mexico. We did have fun back in those early years but each time thereafter I always got sick. I swore I'd never return.
However, I'd love to try Trinidad, Dominica, and Belize. Anyone tried those little Caribbean countries?
Jitters, glad you made it back....just chalk it up as a life experience and move on.

Re: Jitterbug
jamaica has a bad rap with some people . . . my friend cringes just at the mention of my style holidays . . . she thinks i'm insane for staying at jah b's . . .
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation </div></div>
just booked it . . . april 5 to 15 . . . i'm feeling so deprived . . . it was good for me to experience mexico. people have said all sorts of things, i should do this and that and so on, well, i know what i like and need and jamaica fits the bill.

Re: Jitterbug
sounds like you were in standard A/I world
reportedly - even the resorts in jamaica import most food items
there are some eco resorts on the "mayan rivera" that i prefer
and i much prefer mayan food to mexican food
sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation
have you ever taken your travel agent friend on your style jamaican trip?
sounds like she would trip

Re: Jitterbug
i went to playa de carmen two times and once across to cozumel . . . lovely, colorful and very, very busy places. . . . many, many people milling about, stores lined up one after the other selling the same stuff . . . stuff made in china . . . some good leather stores. they had some good knock offs . . .
getting of the plane, i did not experience that humid, sweet smelling air. the terrain in the mayan is like northern manitoba with a smattering of some palm trees . . . did not see one jelly stand, sugar cane or mangos and such. . . . since i had no spanish, nobody was able to direct me to an open air market.
all the fruit at this resort was imported . . . ripened in some cooler . . .
just the vast number of people . . . . . walking down 5th avenue was tricky, you had to dodge the "people traffic" . . . i thought ochi had a lot of tourists. man, that's nothing in comparison.
i walked for miles and miles in each direction along the rocky coast line . . . it looks blue and green but really dirty at shore level . . .
jamaica does it for me . . . it feels like home.

Re: Jitterbug
i’ve lived a pretty “out there” life . . . but what i witnessed at these exclusive resorts is just plain nasty . . . on the other hand, maybe that kind of behaviours is what happens in “suburbia” . . . so it seems . . . perhaps i’m a prude, although i never thought so before . . . this was not a “couples” or “no kids” place . . .
lots of good family people, quite a few 3 generations along, lots of kids, lots and lots of drunks, disorderly drunks, and “other” misfits . . . all out by the pool . . . endless people of “different sexual orientation” doing their thing in and around the pool, things that should have been done in private . . . i’m not for public affection displays . . . lots of little kids around . . .
big percentage of women had fake boobs, it was hard not to notice. . . fully made up faces with big, big hair . . . high heels . . . i felt like i was on another planet, since none of this is my normal lifestyle. . .

Re: Jitterbug
the thing i hate about A/I is the other guests
too much asking "where do you live, what kind of work do you do, are you jamaican, do you come here often, well when i was in {name some fancy place}it was bla bla bla
i like to meet locals not tourists
and cruising is just as bad
disclaimer: IMHO

Re: Jitterbug
disclaimer: these are my own interpretations and perceptions about mexico. i realize a lot of people love the place . . . .
my travel companion loves this type of thing, i got talked into this, thought i’d experience this grand livestyle that is not my normal . . . i prefer to travel in “eco friendly” and “local” places where i can choose to eat at different locations, and just wander around and chat with people . . .
first of all just the sheer numbers of people . . . maybe i suffer from phobias . . .i’m the type of person that makes snap judgments and decisions all of my life and this was not different: i don’t gel with mexicans . . . . . . to me they were rude and ignorant. . . . the workers at the a-1 smiled the whole day long making me believe that it was part of their job description . . . i don’t do any spanish and they plan just refuse to speak english and i’m pretty sure many of them could . . . now, the other guests were something else . . .

Re: Jitterbug
resort 5+ stars, boutique rooms, including robe service, 24-7 room service with really good champagne flowing, our package included full spa service, water sports, my travelling companion’s friend is the travel agent and she threw that in . . . three infinity(sp?) pools on the property, lovely, two buffet areas, two snack bars and 5 a la carte dining rooms, a sports bar that was open 24-7, a photo shop, gift shop and a jewllery shop all on property. . . . beautiful beach property from afar . . . nice thatched little cabanas all around the beach, beach bar . . .
the first odd thing i noticed about this resort is the lack of birds, butterflies, any kind of living creatures that are plentiful in the tropics, no tree frogs at night . . .
i was up early the first morning to see a whole heap of workers spraying the grounds, the cloud of smoke everywhere, now i know why there is no “bug and bird life” on the property . . .
