The series starts in Africa and whether we like it, a lot of African AMERICAN history covered the periods of slavery and segregation. Gates has done NUMEROUS other documentaries about Africa. There hasn't been a lot of research into Blacks in the pre-Columbian era and I have yet to hear of ONE instance of an African American tracing their ancestry to Blacks who came to North America during the pre-Columbian era.
