I picked this up in the airport as i need a hard book for the take offs, landing and helicopter rides... I suffer from mild claustrophobia....
A novel, it is a alternative history, a thriller, a tale of a marriage....
The premise of the novel was in this alternative 1952 the UK was dominated by a triumphant germany.. The UK having made a peace with Germany after Dunkirk....Germany has a rle over uk much the same as the US had in central america in the 1930's... They are at the point that Britian still rules india , US is nuetral, Churchil is a wanted Crimianal running a resistance .. Enoch Powell is the colonial sectary..
To me it was illustration of the danger of over emphasis on ethnicity and nationalism....
The hero of the peice is a second generation irish civil servant who is in the Dominion office of the colonial civil service who is a member of the resistance... He has a secret in that his mother was a Jewish refugee from Russia, but he passes as a catholic.. He is married to a pascifist... And they had a child who had died in an accident and the marriage is drifting apart... He has been contact to lift a friend with whom he went to Cambridge with out of a mental institution to export him to yanki dom.. They do this on the day tehre was a big fog in London.....
TO ME there are similarities with the pre colonial africa history.... How does one survive teh influence of a hegemon and the compromises to survive
