Stared at his picture thru clouded eyes
Ever so often shakes her head and sighs
His younger brother comforts her, holds her tight
Don’t worry mama, it will be alright
Lord knows she tried, years of sacrifice
Yet, knew it was his fate to decide
Just as she had decided to keep him
Conceived of love but out of rhythm
Father left him only footprints
He has been following them ever since
Ran in a neighborhood known for its troubles
Survival was a day to day struggle
Kept him close to her heart, not close enough
Social activities groomed him to be tough
Born comely and with the gift of gab
Always had an excuse, favorite was his dad
Schools became a chore he never had to do
A brilliant mind but no one really knew
The streets were his challenge, only to conquer
Role models on display on every corner
She was taking the news real hard
Given a whole deck, my son drew a bad card
Counselor tried his best to console her
Maam you tried, you are a good mother
I applaud you for all you did for your son
But there is still a younger one
The day has come to let him go
Erase those footprints with a fresh layer of snow
In sadness she replied, your words are appreciated
But that won’t help my son to graduate
You know he just took an unforgiving route
Part of a rising statistic of high school dropouts
Now you tell me, what are his chances?
Tears now flowed, pent up from the day he was born
Hoped she never had to release them
Yet today she mourns </span><span style="font-size: 11pt"></span></span></span>
