March 15 1965 – Voting Rights Act
November 4, 2008 – A Black President was elected
Steps to the Capitol
The lashes were fast and relentless
Slashing the backs of even the slaves who complied
But they worked harder in sun, rain, snow or sleet
Breaking stones with bare hands... but with pride
They did not make a fuss or argue or complain
To them, that would only be a distraction
Instead, they focused on the main mission
That would someday bring their children some traction
They knew way down, deep in their hearts
Things were destined to someday change
There would come that day
When the steps will be used
By men who looked like them
Wearing custom-made suits and shoes
So they cut and they measure stone by stone
Built to last, was their secret goal
They smiled through the pain, strife and fear
Kept smiling when the wounding words stained their souls
It might take a very long time, they imagined
Only God knows just how long
But they focused by the second, the minute the hour
On making those steps solid and strong
They believed in their vision
And knew their labor would not be in vain
They concentrated on just getting it right
Because it would someday be worth the pain
Yes, the wait seemed endless
And the weight was hard to bear
Yet they built with dignity and with pride
As they laid each stone with care
They planned and prayed and kept the faith
They held on for years untold
With God as their guide and hope on their side
They orchestrated and completed a mission, that was bold
They might not be here with us today
To witness the outcome of their manual labor
But their spirit dances and sings in us
And celebrate with PRESIDENT OBAMA!
Our ancestors knew that this day would come
When we could all stand proud and tall
And say THANKS, for those well laid stone steps
That our President will climb to the UNITED STATES CAPITOL!
