Anyone know what type of music was played in the Caribbean (specifically Jamaica) before mento?....is calypso & soca music a recent genre or was it happening before early reggae?

Calypso was really more of a tourist enternment,like Limbo.the general Caribbeann music was not a [art of the Jamaican scene,exept for Cuba.
