marielle i love music from the gambia & mali;
those two specific countries in africa...
i once had a vhs tape with some stuff from mali that i erased most of it by accident; losing that stuff was very hurtful mi a tell yu!
i think they were from a region called wassoulou or something like that---the music was incredible...one song i remember i think was called 'fode';
and i also have an old vhs tape from the gambia with some musicians...i forget what they call them...starts with a 'j'...i will look it up;
but i think that's why they feel the jamaican artists...the music has a similar type of 'soul' and consciousness to it

the most famous Wassoulou sound is from an incredible woman called Oumou Sangare. She is an absolute superstar in Mali. I've seen her several times here in concert. She always looks amazing and so does the band, all in beautiful Malian clothes.
Here is a clip with her performing with Alicia Keys. On this one you can see the beautiful Malian earrings that many women wear. Djenne market day you see lots of them, some bigger than these (I have a pair too - but mine are for decoration, not wearing....)
here is some of her traditional stuff (but she's in modern dress! first time I see it! love the dancers, and love the crowd, why african concerts are always great!! )
