so mi ago add mi likkle bit to the report.
Always wanted to go to Calabash, but since my advance planning is not very good, it always missed me.
This year it was going miss me too, as I was supposed to arrive a week before. Well thanks to Air Jamaica bumping me off of 3 flights one Sunday, I had to re-shuffle my plans and never reach Yard til a week late.
So mi driving with me Aunty Friday morning and mi just telling her about dis one book mi reading "Trust the Darkness" by Tony Winkler and she tell me, but him de a Calabash tomorrow you should go. But wait! Is Calabash time and it almost miss me again. She call her friend who look it up online and find out seh Tony doing a reading in the morning. So mi mek up mi mind fi go early tomorrow (Saturday)
Well Friday night mi did go out wid mi bredrin dem and it run late. And when mi seh late, mi nuh reach back til afta 3am!
What a crosses. Mi affi lef out about 7 fi reach on time to Treasure Beach. But mi know seh if mi nuh go and dem cancel future Calabashes, me'd neva forgive miself fi not going. So mi get mi likkle sleap and touch the road a morning.
Mi reach all the way to Spanish Town Rd, when mi realise seh mi forget mi camera!
Dis day just not starting right at all. So mi reverse back and drive the 20min back up the hill, then down again and now mi vex, caw all now mi nuh get no sleep and now I going miss Winkler doing his reading, which is the main reason mi waan go.

The rest of the drive did nice. For the first time ever I was actually thankful for the Highway 4000

Decide fi go thru Santa Cruz (hail up MTG)
Which probably wasn't the quickest way, but at least the
chances of getting lost were lower.
Buck one piece of traffic inna TB. Cho! Me neva see de place full up so. With all the talk of canceling the fastival, me did tink seh it a flop an noboby nuh come. Me neva did expec the crowd a ppl weh mi see a TB. Place ram!
Mi nuh waan chance park de veekle a road so mi use one a dem pay parking (think it was $200J) and done.
By the time me find the tent, mi miss Seaga (who was also talking that morning) and Winkler was just getting ready fi start!

Is the first time I've met Winkler, and was surprised how old and frail he is. I guess the Parkinsons is taking it's toll.
Hope him can churn out some more books in his time.
After the reading I went to get my book autographed. Told him about how his work nice and funny and tell him to hurry up nuh man and write more stories.
Then there was a break so I go and walk around the grounds.
All now mi hear smaddy a bawl out <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"Magix!"</span></span>
Mi look around and see no one.
Smaddy leggo a <span style="font-weight: bold">"Magix!"</span> again and then mi spot
Coless a hide behind some towels inna one shop!
She seh "Me neva did know seh yuh coming to Calabash"
Mi tell her "me neva did know either"
We a reason fi a minute and pose up fi pikcha tek, wid Coless a drape up fi her sexy foot fi di camera.
Fi her friend Marcia a gi mi some bandulu advice bout which pawt Jamaica dollars exchange in Cuba (See stranded with no money thread later)
But in all seriousness dem is nice ppl and mi glad seh mi meet dem still.

Mi did have plans in Kgn that evening I did not want to miss. So mi decide fi nyam and scram. Them have one elaborate system bout how you get your food, but it actually worked well to feed the masses. You line up in one line where you pay and get a ticket and then line up where the food is and show your ticket fi get what food you order. It was actually nice food too.
Afta mi eat mi neva feel like drive, and mi see seh di ppl dem start fi sit under the tent so me join them and hole a seat. Soon they have Open Mike! Well you know how that go. Open mike could be good or bad, but I must say that with a few excpetions it was very good. We have some talented young and gray roots writers in Jamaica!
Wish I recorded it, but my favourite was a teenage girl who did a rhyme on what it means to be Jamaican. It was so eloquent and clever that she had people a beg for more when her 2 minutes was up.
After the Open Mike finish they had some British-J'can lady read a funny story about catching iguana's and a Canadian writer reading from his book as well, both were good. Then there was another author reading a story about slaves that was good, but not exactly G-rated. All now some vocal parents inna de back a shout sintin to him and him jus a carry on. But after de ppl dem left nobody nuh trouble him again.
Mi go get some ice cream and before mi know it sun getting lower in the sky so it's time to lauch out for real. I really enjoyed the fastival and wished I could have stayed overnight.
I will definately plan to stay for the whole weekend next time, because it's well worth it!

Ya man. It did nice fi real.
Tarrus Riley was plaing Friday night. I wish I could mek it to see that. But the whole vibe is cool and the talent is high so is a really enjoyable time.
I was surprised that no books were being sold anywhere.
I'd expect all the authors trying to get their books out.
None. If mi neva did bring me book from home to get signed, there was no option of buying books there.Comment

There was a book shop where they sold all kinds of books. That was in the same general area where I purchased a few myself including Winklers Duppy and Kei Miller's Same Earth.Comment
