Maybe because he specialized in the tourist circuits?!
Or maybe because he didn't think playing for the locals was his way to fame?!
There are many very food entertainers who follow that path and make one or 2 hits and then, spend their entire professional life doing the same songs along with American music for the tourism industry.
There was a time not very long ago when reggae was not heard in hotels in Jamaica. So artist who serve that circuit, never bother with the Jamaican circuit. No one can answer the question why anyone never made it to be a popular jamaican superstar,....there are many capable jamaican singers out there some well known and some not very well known,but being able to sing competently doesnt qualify anyone to superstardom status.

I would go as far as saying that currently there are very few popular jamaican superstars,...internationally most people will say the only superstar singer to come out of jamaica was bob marley.

Not &quot;superstars&quot; like Bob, but many Jamaican artists - <span style="font-weight: bold">as you know </span>- are quite International.

Now about A.J. Brown, this was the first I heard about him. I listened to both EwTube songs and one other. I am no music afiocionado but A.J. Brown's sound is<span style="font-style: italic"> meh</span>. He's prolly a good cabaret entertainer though.

i would say he was very popular locally ...everybody kown AJ &quot;Boots&quot; Brown...he spent alot fo time ont he north coast circuit ( i remember back in the 70's seeing him at intecon in montego bay...great show) he was very popular at stage shows but he was never really a recording artist...hence very little on the air exposure. I think that is why his talent never transformed internationally.

i think they both had kinda the same style. decent singers, but not much that would be original on the international stage.

Junior tucker like AJ Brown use to love to imitate American blues singers,while the international market wanted genuine stuff. Not Jamaican wannabe blues singers. As You stated they also opted to do more of the type of music, that most of the local artist was running from. At the same time the international markets wanted 'native' stuff. At that time even the local radio would not even play native stuff, other than if they were on the weekly top 10. Fossil, i went far and deep to find the <span style="font-weight: bold">Father My Friend </span>song, I heard it on one of my Stone Love mix cd, and the song just rocked me, when me find out say a dis bredren sing it, i was floored, bigup to de I man, him dyaaamm good!!

sooo surprising dow, that his name is no a household name??? de man go from church, to spanish, to rockers...him blessed, dats all me can say~~

he had a hit in Ja in the 80's &quot;get up chant&quot;. one of my favorite songs..... Then in the early 90's he had another hit...

He was never a soul or reggaee for the purist....
