Takes a Bit of Africa Overseas
with "2009 Fall Tour- Europe"</span>
Los Angeles - Jamaican born visual art master, Bernard Stanley Hoyes ( http://www.BernardHoyes.com ) has been enjoying a powerful year. Upon the recent New York installation of his six-foot granite blue fin tuna, which he crafted from stone in Fuzhou City in the Fujian Province of China, one might think the acclaimed artist might be ready to rest on his laurels for a bit. Not so as Hoyes has announced his "2009 Fall Tour - Europe." Hoyes will be packing his mystical, African-influenced art creations and heading overseas to Amsterdam and Germany exhibiting at three distinctive galleries.
Hoyes' work will open at the Royal Gallery in Amsterdam in the Netherlands August 1 and run through August 30, 2009, and then it's on to Das Leben Geht Weiter (Life Goes On) Gallery in Cologne, Germany from September 5 through September 30. Hoyes will return to Amsterdam October 4 through December 30, 2009 at the Art Vine Gallery, closing out a stellar year.
A cultural icon in his home of Los Angeles, Hoyes' work has remained relevant over the decades in large part due to his ability to capture the essence of spirit on canvas. Hoyes invokes the spirit of his African ancestry within his compositions. His luminous selection of colors and paints convey unspoken passions that literally tap the soul, invade one's persona and evoke volcanic emotion.
Echoes, moans, hallelujahs and laments whisper, shout and wail from his vibrant renditions. Working from a purely intuitive space, Hoyes channels directives from a direct stream of consciousness that emit from ancestral spaces. His ability to infuse such sensitivity within his paintings perfumes the surrounding atmosphere with ethereal quality.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he demonstrated artistic abilities early on. When he was trotted off to live with a great aunt in rural Jamaica, his exposure to revival cults, ceremonies and rituals planted seeds deep within that would manifest as art in his later years.
His formal art studies began at Junior Art Centre at the Institute of Jamaica. At age 15 he left Jamaica for New York City. His art studies continued at the Art Students League and the Vermont Academy. A heady combination of his drive to excel at art and the influence of the civil rights movement placed Hoyes at the helm of propelling the Academy to institute social and cultural programs. Upon graduation he was the first recipient of the Frederick Stanley Art Award and saw the launching of the school's first formal arts department. When Hoyes attended an alumnus reception some years later he felt pride in seeing the new edifice housing the art department. He earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts in painting and graphic design from the California School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
His recognition and celebration of traditional African religion and spirituality continues to find universal appeal, stunning audiences worldwide as evidenced by his "Fall 2009 Tour - Europe." Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Cole, Steve Harvey, Keenan Ivory Wayans and the National Urban League are among his collectors. Selections of Hoyes' work have been featured in several television shows including the Showtime hit series, "Dexter." President Barack Obama has even been photographed in front of his work. His craft has been celebrated internationally in galleries around the world.
