De ting now is are they marketable and if they are they'll sell on that alone. The ppl who own the radio stations now also own the venues where big concerts are played. They also own and have big shares in where videos are played. If they can keep an artist in your face (and ears) long enough you will buy it only because you are used to hearing it.
MG the fact that it had to grow on you tells a lot about any song or movie. It's happened to me as well. I hated a song in the beginning but because they play the song so damn much on the radio, I begin to tap my foot to it and bobb my head. It's called mind control

i can see where you're coming from dahjah. when i first heard "my humps" by the black eyed peas i said what kind of crap are they playing on the radio know. i did get worn down by it to the point where i would hum it, but i never stopped thinking it was crap.
with kanye's music - it's hard to say, i had a hard time processing the unexpected sounds of his new directions. but in time, i got the musicality of it. it was a learning process for me, no joke. the more i listened to the songs played on the radio (Love Lockdown and Heartless), the more i got from them. to the point where i began seeking out other tracks, and the rest u know.
i do feel a certain virtuousness in making myself open to 808s and Heartbreak, mi haffi stop from patting miself on the back for being kind of a with-it old broad, lol
but mi have mi own big head about what i think is good music and i think Kanye's a genius, regardless of the music industry (and I think you're right in a lot of what you say about how they manipulate artists and public taste for music).
