REVIEW: Lisa Miller is a successful chef and is married to a wonderful man. However, she is fighting an illness that has re-emerged in her life. She decides to break the news to her girls while vacationing in Jamaica. Renee Moore, a romance novelist, is Lisa’s sister. With two teenage kids and her third marriage under her belt, she just can’t give up the fast life of partying and meeting men. She uses her looks and body to her advantage, thriving on the challenge of getting attention anyway she can. Renee has deep issues and men are at the top of the list.
Nadine Hill is a divorced attorney and a mother of a teenage son. Her career is taking off, but her personal life is complicated right now-- she has to face the truth about who she really is. Kayla Sparks, a human resource administrator, is the mother of two girls. She is dedicated to her church, but for all the wrong reasons. She’s weak when it comes to men and she must decide if she wants to break the cycle her mother started of men constantly using and abusing them.
With IN THE COMPANY OF MY SISTAHS, the four characters each compliment the storyline, mainly because each character has its own story and together they offset each other. The one character that stands out the most is Renee, who’s definitely a hot mess. You love and hate this woman at the same time. Wherever she goes you can be sure drama follows. Lisa is the spiritual peace maker of the group. She’s nice and thoughtful and they all confide in her. Nadine is the mediator of the group. She believes in arguing her point and yours if need be, that’s the attorney in her. Kayla is the one who goes to church faithfully. While she loves everybody, she’s looking for love in all the wrong places.
The novel is set in Jamaica where the white sandy beaches, deep blue waters, and exotic drinks keep tourists coming year after year. All the elements, the huts serving food and drinks, and the music, served to enhance the romantic atmosphere. That said, the phrase “What happens in Jamaica stays in Jamaica.” is definitely true in this story. Ms. Daniels writing style introduces passion and drama at its best. This book could be considered erotica, so beware, but it is definitely worth reading.
