What book shall we discuss next?

anybody remember the result of the vote? did "Small Island" by Andrea Levy (?) come second?

Or do we want to try a non-fiction? i think the last non-fiction discussion we had (kindof) was for "The Hell With Paradise: A history of the Jamaican tourism industry".

That is SUCH a good book! I met him last year and had him sign a copy of that book. His story reminds me a little of my dad's when he was a child and young adult...all the little things that were done to him affected him to this day.

i am packing up some of my books to send to someone and took it up lass nite and started to reread it...had forgot how fantastic a read it is...remarkable family in the number of 'firsts'...love what he had to say about the notion of 'firsts' wen blacks started to integrate and the effect on our progress since...great book...we forget the fight he was a part of to get Harvard to divest its questionable endowment funding and all the rest of wat he talks about...even some bits about Clinton that we have turned a blind eye to because he has been better than the rest...brilliant book in its information ..if u eva want a book ,let me know...am trimming mi shelves big time

Yes! I was very surprised to see how many Blk ppl went to prison during his reign...and all the info on foreign policy...and it's written so that even I could follow! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I'm about halfway thru the "Prime Minister" by Austin Clarke. It's the book I suggested earlier.

To tell you the truth I'm a little disappointed. It can read, but the plot is not that interesting and what get's me vexed is that it's set on a 'fictional caribbean island'. So all the references are contradicting, and you really can't imagine the setting. I've decided I'll use Barbados in my mind's eye to place the book, or otherwise I'l get more vexed reading it.

I wouldn't mind reading Small Island again. But really looking for some new book though.

Banjo by Claude McKay

..deals wid a 1920 disapora member in France...the other characters r from the WI, Africa and America so it gives a wide scope of thinking as it was in the 1920s...dreams vs reality etc etc etc....

that's what you get for reading Austin Clarke! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img] he's not a bad writer, I guess, since he's got his share of accolades. But I've never been able to get into any of his books.

i like the idea of the randall robinson book - maybe we can do a simultaneous fiction and non-fiction discussion.

i like the idea of Banjo, as well, because if sounds slightly autobiographical (i think McKay died in Morocco, nuh?) and the story sounds like it would deal with a combination of circumstances we don't often read about. But I'd wonder how easily we could get a book like that, either to buy or borrow.

and then again, i haven't read Andrea Levy's book either, and really want to.

So - I propose we try having two discussions: one for Small Island, and one for the Randall Robinson book, and see how this "twofer" goes.
