I have an issue with over emphasis of computers.. and unfortunately spend alot of time trying to divert my 8 year old son towards reading.. I tried harry potter, the hobbit, Annasi, send him for books at the libary he does it as a chore.. I want my children to have the self discipline of reading..

Normally he will brouse non fiction and he will discuss rocks, metals, swords, vikings, planets for hours... fiction is a different type of discpline....

He has began reading a series of books not quite comics a amusing carioon on every page "Diary of a wimpy kid"... He consumed them all 5 of them over a three day....
I banned him from the wii on Saturday... took him to the shop on sunday.. managed to get him interested in a book (cant recall the name.. something about a middle school).. He ignored the TV, hid his DS.. then at 9 o'clock I tried to get him to bed, he cried and begged he wanted to read his book.. He is off to Scouts or cubs camp today and he begged to take his book...!!!!

that pleased me no end!...

(I stop trying to get my 10 year old daughter to read she does it, given a chance.. !!!!) Dughter read the wimpy kid series as well!!!!

Wahalla I understand how you feel

I made my daughter (11) learn how to use reference books before she could do any research on a computer. Nightly homework included looking up words in the dictionary, thesaurus etc.

During the summer prior to first grade, she didn't do any reading and when she got to first grade, began to struggle a bit, and declared that "books are not my friends"

Being an avid reader myself, I almost had a mild coronary. This was a disaster in the making.

I had to FIX this ASAP. I wanted her to LOVE books as much as I did.

Now she purchases books at the bookstore every week and loves to read and cries if she doesn't get to read before bed.

Was it this book ? supposed to be similar to the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series.

I hear you.. It was very hard to get girlKia started (boyKia is an avid reader) and now is a slow moving process until we found the Sisters Grimm and the Canterwood Crest series. I tried the e-version series for her but she wants the physical book so I broke my own rule and bought the book (as opposed to using the library).. but.. she is reading

....in order to love reading it is nessesary to have self discpline...it is harder given the other distractions...

yeah it is....But the concept stuck, he does not react to reading like carrots. Now he has found his literary analog of pineapples....
