mi read di book again lass nite...mi love it even more...mi did know seh Reagan was a racist and dis juss cemented it...mi a go ha some tings fi Bill nex time mi see him dung yah..watch fi di news cause mi a go shout him dung so mek him shame bout sometings....brilliant book which should be a must read by all aldoh mi can see why black establishment neva wudda like it as well as di white ones too...in print, cruel choices by both sides dat much more glaring in dat it mek the sins more widely advertised

okay, february discussion is looming, so let me give the rest of my thoughts on Randall Robinson's book:

i think the book is valuable in giving a behind the scenes look at how politics was played out in the states in the 1980s and 1990s. for sure, i wasn't as surprised by the revelations of racism in the reagan administration as i was in the Clinton one. Robinson's dissection of the ineffectuality of Vernon Jordan (as an example of a Black man who valued his friendship with the president above anything else, and dared not jeopardize it by speaking hard truths about the administration's treatment of blacks) rang painfully true.

i was also intrigued by Robinson's reverence for Michael Manley and Bertrand Aristide. I sought for a hint of condescension but didn't really find any, but not sure why i don't really trust the position in which he has placed them in history. perhaps it is more my own cynicism/skepticism - how often have the heroes of one been revealed to be a villain - all look how Mandela appeared to be a fair-weather friend.

I loved the bits of humour in the book (the author's first encounter with a bagel is priceless!!). and i loved the delicate way he relayed the breakdown of one marriage and the start of another.

Robinson lacks bombast - is that why i feel a sense of pity for him and his foundation? maybe i should read a book by Al Sharpton (is there one?), to weigh an alternate viewpoint about how Blacks seek and achieve political influence in white America.
