I read three of his books... The moon is down, The Pearl, The Grapes of Wrath. But the reason I mention this I am watching a bbc film on him.
I first read The Moon is Down is a tale of occupied Europe. A tale of human resistance. The Pearl I hated because we were taught it in school, I hated because i thought the teacher missed the point it was about a man who dreamed and had the dream snatched away.. not as we were told that the theme was " greed Reaps Corruption". The last was his greatest and possibly the seacond greatest novel in english... The Grapes of Wrath.. when I read it I thought it was alalogorical of rascism... but it lacked mention of any non white people...
That we had no value or space in consiousness... that the world is a white yanki vision. Still I never read Tortilla Flats.
