"My music is a nice fusion of rock, reggae and soul. A little bit of dancehall influence. It's everything that describes me, it's who I am," said Tessanne who is the younger sister of singer Tami Chynn.
Rock music started to shape her personality while in high school in England, where she was exposed to the genre. Her favourite rock bands, which have all influenced her music, include Skunk Anancy, Anouk, System of a Down and singer Papa Roach. Her songs, Hideaway, Guilty By Design, One Night Stand and Messenger all came about by playing the acoustic guitar and singing.
LAYERED LIKE AN ONION
"I sing a lot," says Tessanne, 21. "Like the music I'm always singing. I tell people all the while, I'm like an onion, like Shrek, I've got layers. Each genre of music is like a different part of my personality. I cannot be put in a box. I have a rough side, a political side and a lovey dovey side," she said.
However, when she sings rock music, her 'passionate and raw side,' comes out.
As similar as her personality may be to her music, Tessanne constantly challenges herself. "The challenge I've received is with myself. I constantly challenge myself to do more," said Tessanne.
The challenges only come from within as she feels the Jamaican public has accepted her music. "I've gotten a lot of good response so far. One thing is for sure, Jamaicans appreciate good music and I've always told myself that good music will always prevail," she said.
PASSIONATE ABOUT MUSIC
'Tess,' as she is affectionately called, is very passionate about her music. She is dedicated to her singing and knows that with hard work and the continued support of her family, she will succeed.
"Our parents brought us up to believe in what we do and they support us in what we do. They taught us that it's best to do what you love because it makes no sense being in a job that you don't love," said Tessanne.
PARENTAL INFLUENCE
One token of their support was the studio, The Underground, that Richard and Christine Chin built for their children. "Our parents built this studio for us so that we wouldn't face the problem many artistes face of not having a studio to work in. They always taught us to express ourselves freely and we can do that in our own studio," said Tessanne.
She channelled the freedom to express herself into her music, which she hopes to bring mainstream this year. "I'm just trying to get my songs on the radio, do some music videos and schedule more live shows. That's really what I'm trying to do right now, just getting my music out there," said Tessanne.
Live shows at which she has performed so far are Friends on the Deck, Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival 2006 and her own show at Carlos' Café.
