Best known for their 1982 hit “The Message,” the members are credited with the first recording of DJ scratching, coining the term “hip-hop” and pioneering social commentary in rap.
On the group’s Web site (www.grandmasterflash.com), Grandmaster Flash comments on making history again:
“This is bigger than me. This induction is total acceptance from one of the most prestigious music associations in the world. This induction says that for the decades of work that was put in which later cocreated an entire culture, they honor us. It’s a wonderful feeling to be remembered as one of the architects that pioneered an idea that the whole world fell madly in love with. It is called hip hop.”
Washington, D.C. (February 28, 2007) -- MHD, MTV's High-Definition network, will air the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony live on Monday, March 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The event, which will take place at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, will honor new inductees Van Halen, R.E.M., Patti Smith, The Ronettes and Grandmaster Flash.
