Nothin mysterious about this. It doesn't have to do with "educated" or not.

Bob was the first 'major' crossover artist from reggae, the record prodcuers said it had to be easy for the people outside Jamaica to understand, so they would buy it. If nobody could understand it they woulnd't like it or buy it - it's all about money and marketing. this was at the time when not many people outside of the caribbean knew bout or even heard reggae, or any kinda riddims like it. The record company had to make sure they would get a return on their investment, takin a chance on Bob and his fresh style ah music.

I saw an interview with the record producer that made Bob's albums, you know, that white guy, whatsisname? that big record producer, he was talking on a TV show, about how Bob first start get big..... it slips my mind now but we all know who he is, that's what he said about it -

He also said they added backing tracks to the music, some violins and extra sweet sounds and such, to make it have a kinda nice sweet sound to the buying public, so it wasn't just raw dub, cause they didn't think people in america would buy it. That's also how they created that big, lush, chunka-chunka wall of sound.

This is how they marketed reggae, and Bob, to sell albums to people who had no clue who and what Bob was. it's how they got him, and the music, popular all over the world.

Nowdays its much easier for the artists to chat patois cause Bob was the pioneer with the crossover. By now so much a people are famililar with the music, and maybe a little about the culture, the artist now can just chat however them like in dem tunes and people know what dem a seh, so they free to go ahead and do their thing.

most jamaicans are able to speak very good english for appropriate circumstances...after all our official language is english... </div></div>

I`d excuse the artistes on this one but when it comes to comprehensive scientific expression, patois has no place.
yes patois is a people`s dialect and not a language of any advanced sense of what one would define as a reliable means of communication.

Those who sing day in and day out in patwater show up their limitations. Neither Bob nor many of us speak in proper BBC English, but many of bob`s songs were expressed so that many but not all listeners could understand what he was singing.
Contararily, if you listen or read the lyrics to many of our nowadays Dee Jays and singers the patois is limited to the ears of who know patois from a child. Folks who love it are more fascinated with the mysticism and the beat of reggae rather than what is actually being said.

definetely, but do yuh kno that there are many jamaicans (living in jamaica) who are unable to speak proper english ? they just can express themselves in "proper patois" lol. I dont tell you how amazed i was as i found it out !

yeh, eggzackly. Not saying Bob sang/spoke "proper" english per se, just that he was purposely encouraged to ease off on thick patois, so as to make the music more "accessible" (as they say in 'record production slang')

I would add that Bob Marley songs were full of messages ( Freedom, egality, justice, peace, unity) and i do agreee that he used to sing in queens english in order to be well understood all over the globe, but nowadays, most of what we call "reggae artists" do what one can call "chaka chaka song",all their vocabulary is "Pu.na.ni, Ganja, Murda, Backshot". Besides, since dem sing inna patwa, dem a di ongle one wey ovastand wha dem a chat cau di non-jumiekan listener kyaaan catch patwa. The educational side of the reagge music is leaving. Fortunately is not (yet) the case of di whole a dem.
