It was one of the festival’s most anticipated moments. But for the over 20,000 that filled the venue in EindHoven, Holland, it was definitely historic.
As Dean Fraser charged up the backing band, the crowd whipped themselves into frenzy and when his voiced echoed over the mega speakers from backstage, the crowd went wild.
For the next hour and half, Jah Cure stunned his European audience with an authentic live sound and commanding stage presence. It seemed his all white attire was instrumental in helping the audience capture his soulfulness.
From his stage entry on “Longing for” he belted full length hits, pausing only occasionally to vibe with a young drummer from his Backing Band and of course Dean Fraser, pushing notes beyond the barrier. His trademarke’ en’ esteem. Bless me, Jamaica, King in the Jungle, and when he called on Jah Mason for the hit combination “Run Come Love me” the women could not contain themselves, for those who did not already lose their voices it was a choral sing-along. He passed through his major hits, no “wheel and come again” edition, which you there in Jamaica are used to unless Buju Banton is on the bill. Once “the Cure” dug into “True Reflections” in the early morning the crowd seemed mesmerized by his music. When he wrapped up his set with "Love Is" some members of the audience seemed overcome with emotion.
After nearly eight years in prison, his first performance on an International stage was beyond expectations.
Other noted performers at the Reggae Sundance Festival were Natural Black, and Tony Rebel who never fails in Europe. Tarrus Riley, Marcia Griffiths and Gyptian stole their share of the spotlight, while the four man harmony group LUST lived up to their reputation. Jah Mason was a quick replacement for Richie Spice, who could not make the trip because of Visa issues.
Holland looks forward to seeing him next year. All in all the Reggae Sundance Festival was a success.
