By Alemayehu Seife-Selassie
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – The international reggae artists Luciano the messenger, Mikey General, and Raggalox arrived in Ethiopia yesterday for their first Ethiopian performance in the country. All the artist have not set foot in Ethiopia before but they have had their names tied to different successful shows which include the New York Irie Jam reggae concert that gathered 25,000 crowds.
The performance of the artists here is going to be at the Unity University College tomorrow Saturday. And the international promoter Dave Judah of the Reggae Jam Promotion International told SSI yesterday that the place is chosen for setting the positive message across the college students who are likely to promote the positive message all over Ethiopia.
“We are very much in respect to the Ethiopian people and that is why we have brought the artists. When his Majesty Haile Selassie came to Jamaica, the comment he made was Ethiopians and Jamaicans are brothers. This show is like a memorial for that visit to Jamaica “, Judah said.
For this international promoter who has been coming for the past four New Years Ethiopia is the only African country he has set foot on. And he describes that tomorrow’s concert is going to be historical because this is the first time Mikey General and Luciano set foot here on Ethiopian soil. There had been previous attempts to bring the artists here. But for some different reasons the attempts never materialized. “The attempts to bring Luciano/ Mikey General were there. But the arrangements were not right. And Lucian never thought that it was time for him to come to Ethiopia. But he said to me that he thinks this time is the right time. And he is looking forward to perform at his best for Ethiopia.” Judah said. “He wants to show Ethiopia how grateful he is for His Majesty’s visit”, he added.
In the United States, Dave Judah is also known for the Reggae Jam talent Search show which he organizes every year. And he stated that he just had his 5th show this year on April 6th. On the annual show the artists Luciano, Mikey General and Raggalox have appeared. Having a busy schedule Luciano has done another show on the 8th in New York and has gone with Dave Judah to do two shows in Barbados. By the time this artist was called for a show here he was in Jamaica.
On their performance here, the artists are going to have two shows this Saturday where one is in the afternoon and another one in the evening both at the Unity College. But after the show, they will be staying for seven days, where they will have time to visit the Rasta community populated Shashemene and other parts of Ethiopia. “This is the first time that these artists are coming here [Ethiopia]. So they will be trying to cover most of the ground. Luciano is one of the most demanded Reggae artists all over the world and that is why he can not stay here long. And when ever they book Luciano they also book Mikey General because they perform together.” Judah said.
After their show here the artists will be flying to Jamaica to take part in the annual show by the name “Western Consciousness”.
The artists are also booked for the largest crowd gathering Irie Jam concert in New York Queens that will take place September 2nd, 2007. “After the show, I will come straight here as I do every year for the New Year. I am looking forward for a wonderful celebration this year. I want to celebrate the New Year here with my Ethiopian family”, Dave Judah said. This promoter has set plans to have another show this year in relation to the millennium [September 2007] as well.
We have plans on the table right now to bring more artists that have never been here before. “I have had lots of people who want to work with me now that I have proved to them that I can do it. And the hype there in the [United States] among the Rastafarians to celebrate the Ethiopian millennium is very very high. I am one of the organizers for some groups that will be coming here”, he said.
Sandial Herbs Intl, Vital Health Foods, Barry Jerk Delite, and Irie Jam radio (where Judah works as a radio DJ) are the New York Sponsors for the show. From Ethiopia the partners which are working hand in had with Dave Judah are Jah Restaurant, His Imperial Majestic Promotion. The local sponsors for the event are Adika, Ralco, St. George and Coca Cola. “We just want to send our appricialovetion. You might want to use the term “appreciation”, but we just want to send out love as well, so that is the term we use for our thanks”. said Judah.
