This is Khaled Hosseini's (Kite Runner) second book and it is such a wonderfully written, emotionally charged, gut wrenching, make your stomach cringe, bawl a thousand times story.
This book just like Kite Runner took place in Afghanistan. The story is about two women Mariam an harami (bastard child) and Laila a much loved daughter who lost her parents to a bomb blast. Both ended up married to the unloving, unforgiving, blasted wicked Rasheed...an egotistical sociopathic maniac who delivered physical and emotional blows to the women for every little and non-sensical infraction he felt was aimed against him.
Within this story is the story of Afhanistan a once thriving country that went through one war after another and civil strifes through the hands of the Soviets, the mujahideens, and the ruthless Taliban.
The story itself is a work of fiction but there is a high realism to it for the characters portrayed (abused women) and Afghanistan, the country. READ IT!!
