sorry..juss a chek bak an read seh u did wan mi fi sen it...i kept it by the computer incase dat is wat u wanted but been hitting di sales all week ...mea culpa [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif[/img] if di library going to tek long let me know..i can have it to u by priority mail..it is a splendid book indeed...i bet noone can memba wen i raved about the last king of scotland...i had picked that book an this one up at the said time years ago, at one of those book sales...weh smaddy rent a vacant storefront fi a couple months an bring een overstocked books...

i just finished reading

No Shortcuts to the Top by Ed Viesturs...was interesting if you're into mad adventure kinda stuff.

Ed Viesturs is the first American to climb all 14 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen...took him 18 years to complete his quest.

That sounds interesting. My parents did some of the high mountain climbing in their youth.

But mi fly over 5 of the 14 8000m peaks couple of days ago, and you nuh go find Magic dem ends! [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cold.gif[/img]

Some of these peaks like K2 and Nanga Parbat look as though if you were to fall it will take half an hour til you splat onto the terra firma. No wonder so many ppl dead up there. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scareyuh.gif[/img]

i have always found the conquering of uncharted lands fascinating. Read Shackleton's account of the Endurance...that was amazing.

you got to have a near deathwish to climb as many peaks as many times as this man Viesturs. he's really had incredible luck, despite his training....one wrong move...and you're a goner.

everytime i read about these peaks in Nepal...i want to go there, not to climb, but even to just sit at the lower elevations and take it all in.

ennyways....as i read this, i thought it might be a book you'd find interesting Magic.

Luck is the key here.
The weather can turn real nasty in the mountains real quick. And you have to have the judgement to turn back after month of preparations and money spent and call it quits if the weather deteriorates. Those who don't oftgen don't come back at all.

Plus you have to deal with frost bite, blindness (all that snow reflecting in you eye for weeks) and altitude sickness. We're talking about over 28,000 feet here.

Mi have respect fi di ppl that do it, but it's not fi everyone. And it a wear you down mentaly still caw you loose a lot of your friends to the mountains. That's why my parents quit doing it. Too much ppl dead.

Is it as good as "Into Thin Air"?

I think this guy Ed Viesturs was on Everest when that disastrous storm had struck and nuff climbers lost their lives up there.

A quietly thought provoking and sensitive story. The characters were remarkably real and remarkably touching.

I hope Martha Southgate have more books out there for me to enjoy.

I'm finishing up a book Ugly Ways by Tina McElroy Ansa
