I did find this to be a bit disturbing.... Ida was only what, 13 y.o. when she started having fantasies of Flynn? And Flynn seem to have an history of soughting 'likkle gyal picknies' as we would say in Jamaica. And Joseph who seem to be blinded that his very young daughter had started sexual relations with a man who was in his age...., or older than he was.

Actually in the novel Oni (Ida's grandmother) was married to the Chinese shopkeeper (and then he left her). But Ida's mother Esme, is not and Ida internalizes some of her mother's concerns about that. I think that race often was a factor in common-law marriages; it goes back to slavery days and it continued strong through the mid twentieth century. Class and "shade" were often (unfortunately) an important consideration in decisions about who or who not to marry; and yet there were always these exceptional romances (sometimes resulting in marriage and sometimes not)between people of different races, people who defied family, tradition, class boundaries. I love that about Jamaican society.

From the author: Thanks to all for your wonderful questions. It's always a pleasure to take part in Jamaicans.com book discussions. I meant to return and take more questions, but had to leave town several times.
I will check in from time to time to answer any more questions.
I also wanted you all to know that Random House is re-printing my first book "The True HIstory of Paradise"(coming out early next year) and Random HOuse is also bringing out the paperback of "The Pirate's Daughter "this August.
Both books will be available in Jamaica this May at the Calabash Festival, Treasure Beach, through my UK publishers. The book is also available in Australia (any Jamaican-Australians out there? I'd love to hear form you). Again, thanks for inviting me.

i love how you juxtapose the intimate details of your characters against the backdrop of current events at the time

besides being fascinated with Ida, May and Oni

the history of jamaica plays out in the background

the Manley election

the blame after the Manley election

the rise of reggae and Rasta

the two sides of ganja - as drug and medicine (Oni sends some for Karl)

the struggles with colour

and adding Errol Flynn et al - the start of major tourism in JA

The good news is that since yesterday <span style="font-weight: bold">the book'sratings jumped from # 52 to #13 on the Amazon.com UK bestseller list</span>.Success is all too fleeting so I'm sharing this w/ you today. Tomorrow,who knows?
