i still dont see how his alledged "blackness" takes away from the man being a very good writer.

I really like this book and was impressed with how he was able to capture a young girl's POV of the impact slavery had on her entire life.

and are only black ppl to read books with such subject matter?

As to your other statements; You write what you know and I would not be convinced that a man, let alone a very caucasous one(how dat sound?) knows how a little black girl would think, react, make decisions naturally. He would be guessing and often be way off base. He could convince the less discerning, but not me.

Nylah, I was not familiar with the book but I saw the cover loud and big <span style='font-size: 14pt'>"THE BOOK OF NEGROES"</span> being read by a caucasian. My visceral reaction is exactly as I stated and I make no apologies. I find the title a little more than tasteless. I find it offensive.

It is fiction, but It should be convincing. Would you as a casting director cast a 40 something white man to play a ten year old black girl?

On judging a book by it's cover; while it's a nice and popular saying, it's never true. The author/publisher chose that incindiery title because s/he knew it would get a second look among the hundreds of other books on the shelves.
