Was in Books ECt yesterday and noticed that irritating picture of Garvey on the front of a book... I picked it up and had a quick look...

I browsed the book.. and I found out a couple interesting facts..

The diaspora left , those apolosits for the Soviet union.. Those who saw butchery as progress did not like Garvey.... Because he did not fit into their simplistic roles.. ie we will all be saved by the coming of the revolution... And any discourse those who dare to question their pat assumptions are veived as sell outs....

It was George Padmore who started the roumour that Garvey was dead so that Garvey read his own biography.....

And CLR James veiwed Garvey as an enmy..

It makes me feel warm that Garvey saw their error and when he questions theri assumptions he too was called an idiot, a running dog, a class traitor....

I am no unapologetic admirer of GArvey, I think alot of his thought is dated, was focuded on a anglo black dopplerganger society, he was imho a protofascist with a near god complex.. He was a Jamaican.. I saw alot of my fatehr in him... But I have a lot of respect for who he was and what he developed in a time of challenge..

I started reading this yesterday. Other than the principal subject of the book, many of the incidents mentioned are still topical.

Got a copy today..(List price UK £20.00.. Bougth it through a seacond hand site got a new copy for £13.00.. The US price). Will be reading in one book time or as bed time reading...

any one else got a copy of this Garvey biography ?????

I will forever associate Garvey with, 1910's bling, being engagaded to a white ooman, saving the guvnor from a beatign and arranging a celebration for the coronation!

And it seems that there is a need to look at the Jamaican immigration to Central and South America.... Never seen a coherent systemised study on this....

By the way this book is an easy read.... Am impressed with it... I like the balance style and the way the authour has not resorted to the standard histronics that often comes with Garvey... I heard an intervewi on the BBC world Service book program wioth the authoru and he mentioned that this was his intention...

There are a couple of huge holes in this book and surprises...

The biggest hole is Garvey's travels in Europe, South America and Southern United states... This is glossed over... Garvey made a remarkable quick adjustemnt from Jamaica - British Subject to a Black American.... This leaves at time a sense of un satisfaction as to Garveys motivation.. If you think Garvey was just simply ablout race than there is no need for this explanation... But the book demonstrates that Garvey was not simpy thus..

Garvey sought the approval of white people.. He hargunged the Guvonor of Jamaica, teddy rosvelt and the president of Harvard to get their approval... His early supporters in Jamaica were white, not as I was led to belive poor Jamaicans...

You know I think Garvey would have supported the invasion of Iraq.. He did support the US intervention in Europe and the UK war in WWI. He openly encouraged the recruitment of both Jamaicans and black Americans to join up..

More remarable than this all was the discovery that that the begging letter from Jamaica was around more than a centuary ago.. And that women thought little of imposing and requesting clothes from america... Yep Amy Garvey may have not requested name brands, but she was most definate requested multiple traveling clothes that were colour coordinated!

I'm surprised by just how topical the battles fought then still are today.

I finished the book feeling great admiration for and some disagreement with Garvey.

Finished it today.... The man had an ego for ssure.. And his disdain of Sellasie in exile was implied to be due to the fact HIM walked past him when UNIA went to meet him at the rail station in London.... Garvey was a supporter even though HIM return the invitation...Previously he had been a strong supporter of the Solonomic monarchy...

What was missing was what was discussed with the KKK...

His treatment of his family was later copied by younger generations of Jamaicans....

That he was a relatively honest man is no dobut confirmed..

But the best thing I discovered... Ras Markonen was a calyso fan....That down grades the man's godly character!
