The irony to this is that this is the same organization (or their forerunners) that took pagan places of worship and converted them to their churches. Talk about a twist of fate.

Churches are being deserted because attendance and the resulting tithes are down. The Vatican can't or won't pay for the upkeep of churches bereft of parishoners.
