Depending on which view I have heard quite a few other islanders refer to Guadeloupeans as pro-colonial. This view I never understood because Guadeloupe was the place to be feared in Obeah and Voodoo terms. If somebody said that they were going to Guadeloupe everybody paid attention.
Interestingly, those place that seem to have some strong colonial(non-African) presence have maintained a high degree of African culture, like Cuba, Dominican Republic.

Retention and modernization altogether, when I first saw this mas, the steps were fused with zouk, now I see the Jamaican spin.
