Biblical Prophesy - Literal or Metaphorical?

Should we anticipate the fulfillment of Bible Prophesy as a literal event, or anticipate them as symbolic events?

How were the fulfillment of past prophesies seen? Were they literal or symbolic?

(please give scripture if you can... i want to raise the level of the discussion)

I seem to be easily misunderstood sometimes, so let me elaborate just a little.

Some people & churches take Biblical Prophesy literally - "A flood will come" and the flood comes sort of thing.

Others consider the Biblical Prophesies as illustrative - "A flood will come" and there is a 'flood' of something associated with the prediction.

I just wanted to get a discussion started on the various issues that either viewpoint would suggest.

I've since learned that there are people in the Christian faith who believe all kinds of opposing things. They can't agree on anything.
