The symbol of the fish was used by early Christians as a sign to other Christians of their solidarity to the faith. This emblem is still used today among Christians as a representation of Jesus, who was called the &quot;fisher of men&quot;.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Early Origins of the Fish Symbol</span>

Christianity was formed between 108 anc 118 A.D. under Ignatius. Various Gnostic sects developed, which were eventually unified under the direction of Constantine in 325 A.D. as Christianity. These early Christians adopted many pagan customs, one of them being the fish symbol. They used this fish mark to distinguish themselves from others outside of their religion. Along with the fish symbol, Christians also adopted another practice that many other religious groups engaged in, which was the use of an acrostic. The use of an acrostic was a way for those of the same religion to identify themselves in secret, as those outside of the religion would not recognize the acrostic.

Christians made use of an acrostic from the Greek word Ichthus. Spelled &quot;Iota Chi Theta Upsilon Sigma&quot;, the acrostic &quot;Ichthus&quot; (pronounced &quot;ich thoos&quot was used by early Christians to identify themselves as followers of Christ.

According to the Webster New International Dictionary, the word &quot;Ichthus&quot;, also spelled &quot;Ichthys&quot;, in Greek means &quot;fish&quot;. It also refers to the early Christian mystical symbol for Christ being a fish. Christians then took the word &quot;Ichthus&quot; and formed an acronym from the Greek words, resulting in the phrase &quot;Iesous Chrestos Theos Yios Soter &quot;. In English, this translates into &quot;Jesus Christ Son of God Savior&quot;. In this way, Christians could now forever link the word &quot;fish&quot; to Iesous, or Jesus.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Pagan Roots of the Fish Sign</span>

Various cultures have used this religious sign for thousands of years. Pre-Christian era, this sign was always associated with the Great Mother Goddess, a pagan veneration of the moon, just as the sun was the symbol worshipped by Constantine the Great, who changed the biblical day of worship from the 7th day of the week to the 1st day in 321 A.D. in order to worship the venerable day of the Sun.

One can find an association between the Goddess and the fish in many pre-Christian cultures. Because the fish symbol was linked to fertility and birth, many cultures acknowledged this pagan deity. The Romans referred to this deity as Venus, the Egyptians worshipped Isis, a god represented with a fish on her head, and the Celts and other cultures throughout northern Europe also paid homage to this deity.

This is the same pagan deity the bible refers to as Dagon, a Philistine god whose name originated from the Semitic root dag, which means little fish. In fact, every culture who has embraced this deity can trace its roots to this Philistine god. In Judges 16:23 the lords of the Philistines have gathered together to offer a sacrifice to their god Dagon. Strong's Concordance refers to this Philistine deity as the fish god.

In Dr. Thomas Inman's Ancient Pagan and Modern Christian Symbolism, Dagon is represented in a sculpture from Mesopotamia as a man clothed with a fish. Inman states that &quot;the fish's head is represented as of the same form as the modern bishop's mitre&quot;. A representation of Dagon from a bas-relief in the Louvre shows a drawing of a man with a human upper body and the lower body that of a fish. An Assyrian representation of Dagon from Layard's &quot;Ninevah&quot; depicts a man clothed with a fish head, much like the mitre worn by priests in the Catholic church.

This last depiction, from Layard's &quot;Ninevah&quot;, was at least five hundred years before the Christian era. In later eras, other cultures, such as Egypt and China, adopted the use of the fish head as the mitre, emulating the same form as the mitre worn by the Roman Pontiff.

The mitre worn by the Pope today clearly resembles the fish-like deity Dagon. This papal mitre, which the Pope as well as other Catholic officials are clothed in, is representative of the fish-god, with a pointed top separated by an open mouth, resembling the image of a fish.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The Bible and the Fish Symbol</span>

Christians offer the explanation that the fish symbol simply represents the Messiah. According to Dr. C.J. Koster, due to Augustine's desire to adopt another element of pagan worship into the Church, attempting to Christianize pagan practices, emblems and pagan deities, paganism was mixed with Messianic belief. Hence, the fish sign was linked to the Messiah.

Exodus chapter 20, verse 4 decries the use of graven images. Moses goes on to say that &quot;thou shalt not bow down to them&quot;, which is simply a form of worship. Deuteronomy chapter 4 warns not to make any likeness of any graven image, &quot;the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth&quot; (verse 18).

In the New Testament, the Apostle John says in 1 John 5:3 that if one loves the Most HIgh God, they will keep his commandments, that his commandments are not grievous. Other passages in the New Testament also confirm that such practices are not condoned by the Most High (1 Corinthians 6:9, Acts 17:29, Revelation 9:20).
