My two cents is that religions are memes. They are thinking fashions that slowly evolve over time. And like any fashion they are constantly changing. Some people will get crystallized or stuck in an appearance fashion for their most of their lifetime. We all know people who never changed their &quot;look&quot; for fifteen years. Religious fundamentalists who try to stop any change in the way the religion is manifested in their culture remind me of people who have gotten stuck in an outdated style... that look is their true self.

It circumscribes the parameters of your experience and abilities, it dictates the way you see the world and yourself, and compels you to do the things you do. In short it is root cause of your predominant mind-set.
