Bishop Steven Arnold (file) Bishop Steven Arnold, who just resigned from his position at St. Mark Baptist Church <span style="font-weight: bold">over an affair he had with a female parishioner, is back at the pulpit at First Baptist Church</span>.

Three to five hundred people are attending the three-day revival at the North Little Rock church where Steven Arnold is serving as the guest preacher. The senior pastor at First Baptist said that Arnold agreed to be part of the revival before his resignation from St. Mark.

Meanwhile, leaders at St. Mark are working on a plan to move forward in search of a new pastor.


<span style="font-weight: bold">Below is the official statement from St. Mark Baptist Church regarding the resignation of Senior Pastor Arnold.</span>

On October 3, 2010, the Board of Elders at St. Mark Baptist Church accepted the resignation of Bishop Steven Arnold, its Senior Pastor of 21 years. Bishop Arnold announced his resignation to the church during all three worship services on Sunday, October 3rd. Leaders of the church are preparing for a closed meeting with St. Mark’s members to discuss the situation and its plans to move forward.

Bishop Arnold tendered his resignation to the Board of Elders after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with a female parishioner.

“It is with a heavy heard that we accept the resignation of our pastor. Under his leadership, we have experienced tremendous growth, both spiritually and numerically. We love and deeply appreciate all that he has done for us through God’s enablement these past 21 years. In our efforts to curtail speculation and gossip, the Board of Elders made the decision to be more specific about what led to Bishop Arnold’s resignation. But out of respect and sensitivity to the families and all that are involved, we will not release any more information other than this. We prayerfully hope that the public will show the same respect and be considerate of the feelings of family members and our church during this difficult time,” Elder Lamarr Bailey said.

Church leaders are working on a plan to move forward in search of a new Senior Pastor in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the church. By the grace of God, St. Mark Baptist Church will continue the work of the ministry as they reach and impact lives for Christ.

Pulaski County Tax Assessor Janet Troutman Ward, exposed this morning in an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article for granting legally questionable real property tax exemptions on the personally owned homes of nine preachers, has reversed course.

She says she'll put these homes on the property tax rolls after all. Taxes are due Oct. 12 She said she'll only seek taxes for this year. Some have had exemptions for years and Ward could seek refunds, but she said she still believes she has a legal justification for these exemptions and says she'll see how the issue plays out in expected court challenges before deciding on past taxes. She's also discovered one more exemption than originally reported.

The taxes totaled roughly $31,000 a year on homes ranging up to a $600,000 west Little Rock spread with pool and tennis courts. <span style="font-weight: bold">The largest beneficiaries, according to Charlie Frago's story, were Bishop Steven Arnold, until recently senior pastor at St. Mark Baptist</span>; Awareness Center International Apostle Lawrence E. Braggs, who had the biggest house; United Pentecostal Church Presbyter Bill Harden, and Joel Holmes of North Little Rock's First Pentecostal Church. Ward said the pastor of her church was not among those exempted.

Ward she'd had the policy in place for 10 years, but many pastors, including leaders of mainline churches, didn't qualify because they didn't use their home for church purposes as these did. She contended they used homes for counseling, prayer sessions and other ministries. She said further that case law was murky, but offered support for her tax-exemption for parsonages. &quot;I just don't give it to anybody,&quot; she said. She said she'd denied a licensed minister this week because his preaching was part-time. She said she didn't know if any other assessor granted exemptions to personally owned preachers' homes.

She decided to reverse course, she said, after a discussion this morning after the article appeared with Karla Burnett, the county attorney. &quot;She believes they should be put back on&quot; the tax rolls. She said she's pretty sure only 10 parcels are involved, though she's still researching potentially a couple more. &quot;I think I'll get sued,&quot; she said, but she said this could either be from someone contesting the past exemptions or seeking one.

&quot;It's a legal question,&quot; she said. &quot;I didn't set out to do this maliciously.&quot; She said a legal challenge might be useful in clearing the air. She was preparing letters today notifying preachers of her decision, but she said the media was already doing a good job of getting the word out.

i always knew he was checking women in the church...one came to me about his advances...wat i could not understand was how the men on the altar did wat they did an still had the support of the congregation

but in reading the views of the supporters, the one thing i noticed dem saying was dat Bishop would forgive them their sins...hello...i thought only God could forgive sins...so it seems that it was a revolving door of doing wrong an being absolved by one who was also doing sin n in no position to judge

no wonder everybody who worked for the church was doing so well financially...now they r afraid that the thirteen million dollar expansion dat is on the way may be in jeopardy if he really leaves...he had stepped down wen di wife left wen his dealing wid di new usher was her last straw...he was bak in two weeks wen tithes went down wid di reduced attendance...he is the draw fi real
