Religion is a man-made concept, and despite being felt by the "believer" to be beneficial to themselves, is overwhelmingly detrimental to world cohesion and positive development. Discuss.

I particularly connected with the part about the praying children NOt being Islamic, NOT being Christian because they are too young to understand the concepts involved.

Religion should be like alcohol and voting: reserved for adults who can understand what is involved.

i have to admit i dont....i live by the policy of consider the source n frankly reach the stage where entertaining certain attempts at debunking Christianity using the bad apples is akin to abandonning Jamaicans.com due to the couple bad apples ...i wont leave Jams.com n wont address etc etc etc

Evanovitch,
I was once involved with a school in which principles of Taoism were used and the Tao Te Ching read and there was no supreme being or prayers but just principles of life.

It is certainly not what most people would call a religion.

2)
I believe that it is pointless to argue logic against faith because faith does not require logic. If the things that the faithful believed were provable with facts and logic, faith would not be needed.


3) There is no doubt that while many derive solace and strength from religion, religion over the past 2000 years has been a divisive rather than a unifying force for humanity as the videos clearly showed.

We'd have been better off with the Tao universally as a way to life in peace and harmony than with all the disparate faiths that are almost all based on the thought that anyone else's religion is heretical and/or false and therefore a reason to dislike the person who believes in a different God or gods.

e.g. people can claim biracial n all kind of terminology but they will never be fully of the one race they really want to be...

I actually agree with you.

I was brought up in the Anglican (Episcopalian) church...used to go Sunday sch every week...one week we learned about the 10 commandment. One commandment states that we should not worship false idols. At the end of every service we had to form a queue in front of the altar in front of the big cross and make a sign ..top to bottom...left to right..then bow....I refused to do it that Sunday because it just seemed like idolatry to me. That was the last time I went to that church. The parents got mad but couldn't force me because they knew I was right.

At 14 a housekeeper we had forced me into getting baptized at her church (church of god of prophecy). As I observed the members I became leery of the way they chose to worship and stopped going altogether.

I came to find my own way spiritually over time as I matured. Before that I was confused about what to believe. I even flirted with atheism at one point but there was such a void in my life. The absence of faith made me feel incomplete as a human being. This feeling I had reconciles with the scriptural based purpose of mankind (1 Peter 2:9) ... to worship God and that solidified my beliefs.

I am not a church person but definitely a believer in the principles of Christianity. As Mahatma Gandhi said: &quot;I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians.&quot;

Where I have to disagree JC is that I think as parents it is our responsibility to provide our children with a moral compass, and that does not mean you have to be a Christian to do that. I just think that if we can fill our children's heads with foolishness such as the tooth fairy, easter bunny, or Santa Claus, we should be able to tell them the story of Jesus, if not for religion then based on the principles alone.

I would agree with you that a moral compass has to be established in each child but more along the line of &quot; Don't hurt anyone, treat them as you would want them to treat you &quot;, and decidely NOT God doesn't want you to do that and it's a cosmic sin and God will be upset with you.

Sorry, God is too big a concept for someone under 18 to grasp.
Teach morality absolutely but morality for humanitarian reasons and not because some mysterious (amorphous all-powerful possibly angry) authority figure will be angry and you'll burn in hell.

If you're feeding all this to a kid, he or she will just be following rote and tradition and what his parents are telling him or her much as elementary school children do when reciting the words to the U.S. &quot; Pledge of Allegiance&quot; &quot;...........one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all&quot;

Like a second grade kid understands what &quot;one nation INDIVISIBLE&quot; means???
He thinks it means you can't see it. That it's invisible.
An invisible country???.....COOL!

Just so , said way getting kids &quot;used to&quot; church practices, the rituals, the social thing that church going often is and references to God and Jesus that are way over their abilities to understand keeps them from the possible discovery of their own spirituality on their own. It also is censorship if you do not also present the argument for atheism at the same time and for the same duration as the pro-God indoctrination.

No one can make a competent decision based on only half of the information on a given subject and no child can make a rational decision because they are too young to understand the concepts involved and also because of the likelihood that they will be getting only half the story , half the possibilities to consider and atheism isn't one of the things seriously presented to most kids in church-going families.

Gosh... I think it is more about magical-thinking than philosophy. All cultures seem to believe that there is something magic going on here, and that there are some people among us who know how to make the invisible angry &quot;gods&quot; happy. Dress like this, burn this, give this much of your money away, don't do this or that, do this to your beard... but not that. On and on and on. If you were born into a Muslim family then everyone you know believes that story and rituals about how to make the god happy... and if you are born to a Jewish family you will believe their story and rituals... and on and on. Even Scientology is fits that definition... that is, it is a culture that you can get swept up into, and there are humans who can teach you the way to get the god on your side. Often there are &quot;sacred texts&quot; that the invisible beings gave to special men who know how to &quot;interpret&quot; the words. Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, L Ron Hubbard, The Bab.

Plus, everyone in the culture usually must conform to the rituals or you know bad stuff will happen.

And consider, when a family goes to church on Sunday it would not be practical or possible to leave the kids home. So the kids are dragged into the rituals, the traditions from early on and before they can make any rational judgement on the validity of what they absorb and what becomes a part of them. By the time they get to the age where they can reason, they are already brainwashed in the most effective way, from birth.

This is not good at all.
