Black People & Reparations

Re: Black People & Reparations
I put this here as a question of ethics and morality.
Many white people and even some black people feel that black people should not get reparations for slavery. I have argued if not for slavery, what about eugenics, withholding medical treatment (Tuskeegee experiment), race riots in Tulsa, Wilmington, Rosewell, St. Louis, or the decendants of lynching victims? Or for the withholding of civic rights and social services all while being taxpayers?
Thoughts, ideas, anyone? Let's discuss.

Are some groups more deserving of reparations? Why or why not?

In 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government. How would this be distributed? What about those who are not aware of any african-american ancestors? Would a person with half their parentage of african birth, be entitled to half? What about those light-skinnded people around?

You have to strike while the iron is hot. If your ancestors didn't get their 40 acres and mule before Lincoln was assassinated then it's pretty much over. I know mine didn't so we have had to fend for ourselves.

Re: Black People & Reparations
Since slaves worked for a few hundred years for no pay and since abolition in 1865 have been held down under the continuing racism under Jim Crow laws, descendants of slaves have been paid less for the same work since then, forced by that economic racism to live in the poorer, less safe, less desirable areas of the country and cities, last hired, first fired,
no rational person would say that reparations are not due to those in the black community who need them.
They did hundreds of years of slavery, lost their families, their cultures, their dignity.
What is needed and what should be granted is about two generations of reparations to equalize things economically. Even with that, without a concerted effort by the federal government AND more importantly state and local governments the racial prejudice would continue so economic justice must come first
If slavery. Jim Crow and an anti-white racism had happened to the ruling whites, reparations would be the law.
We have had more than one discussion on this matter within the past two years here when certain ignorant white people said that racial discrimination no longer exists in the United States and in fact argued that programs to alleviate racial discrimination through racial preference quotas were no longer needed.
The ignorant thinking on this is the same as those who say that we have had 50 years or so of the " War On Poverty" in which welfare has failed to ease the problem.
Well DUH ! If you give people so little in welfare that they remain in poverty, the situation cannot get better and it did not. The left and the liberals wanted to pay more, the Republicans and other fascists wanted to pay nothing so they compromised and gave them half what it takes to get out of poverty.
Of course that could not work. And it didn't.
Now the right comes around and says " Look we've been giving these cadillac welfare moms all this money and look what they did with it. They're just as bad off as before because they are so irresponsible ."
Obviously stupid thinking but that is what they say and that is what is believed and repeated ad nauseum by people who are racist /stupid to begin with.

Re: Black People & Reparations
About the same percentage of Black Americans are on welfare as White Americans. Since there are more White Americans in the U.S. then there is a greater quantity of them sucking up the resources.
I don't care for it when folks imply that more blacks either in percentage or quantity are slurping up the liberal gov't benefits. Po dunks are getting their fair share too yet catch another whole case of denial about it.

Tulip,
IMO the long slow recession and the overall decline of capitalism due to globalisation will guarantee a very heavy number of people who will be unable to find work for a decade.
The recession will of course hit those already at the bottom of the economic ladder much harder and as you pointed out this means a great many more white people but with a higher percentage of the already more heavily economically deprived black population catching more of the hell in this racist capitalist society which is always quick to blame the victims of the system.
The dumb crackers will always want the black population to point to as people less worthy than their poor-@$$ed selves.

Assuming that the blacks in America are more heavily economically deprived is part of the problem. So as I said whites are in denial as to their state.
Not only do "dumb crackers" feel more entitled, but pat themselves on the back like they are doing so much better. It appears that believing that blacks are as a whole doing much worse than them when it's just not true helps foster some sort of superiority complex.
I have no argument that the top 1% in income is majority white. However, given all the years of free labor, legalized racism, and still existent white privilege even though they claim reverse racism, they're really slacking to be the same percentage wise on public assistance.
Who is really taking up the most space on the bottom rung of the economic ladder? Whites Americans. And though that is a fact now, at the rate things are going, that can only last so long because they are getting bred out.
I think the impending realization that they will not be the majority for much longer is part of the reason why some latch on to immigration reform like grim death.

Right .
And to be fair you'll get the same percentage of the Taino reparations as the percentage of Taino in your genetic make up.

Slave owners rarely freed the children they procreated with slave women, so percentage of African heritage seems irrelevant. Cops don't look to see if someone is biracial when stopping them for DWB.
