Listened to it today on the way to church....been listening to the cd from the start of Lent then I will watch it on Good Friday. My father used to play the album when we were growing up so we know every single song! -

i really should get the cd. love the music to pieces. my favourite song is "I Only Want to Say", i think as much for the words as for the vocal strength this song demands - especially that cri de coeur at 2:27.

Neeley!!
Although I went and tek up mi self go watch him perform it live like 5 years ago, i should not have done that him voice was not the same and I left disappointed..Comment

i prefer Gillan. Maybe because i listened so much to that album in my youth that his version became definitive for me. after the controlled emotion in Gillan's renditino, I find Neely's multiple inflections a bit strange.Comment

ok, definitely getting the cd so i can belt in the car too. u know, i used to try singing that song and always found it challenging, because you had to go from the quiet introspective lyrics to the raging screech of anger and fear.
strange as it may seem, this album confirmed my atheism while increasing my appreciation of the message of Jesus Christ.Comment

Mi love all di songs dem except for the Herod one.....all the rest I enjoy singing, I cant wait to watch it Friday while eating mi escovitch fish...yum....that might not be a good idea as mi might choke with the singing.
As a child it made me <span style="font-style: italic">want </span>to read the bible cause I wanted to know if it did really go suh.Comment

i cant watch the movie, cause i have a philosophical issue with the portrayal of jesus as a gringo and judas as a black man. i'll listen to the music tho.
i'm surprised your father allowed this music, even on youtube some of the users consider it blasphemy because they see it as mocking the jesus story. your dad was pretty progressive.Comment

that's a tough one. like who has the best pizza, chicago or new york. (new york).
i think in general I'm for parts of each. I got to see Neely literally wreck the room with his version a few years back on broadway, it was staggering in sheer emotional delivery especially when considering he is constantly doing the material.
I really like so many of these songs, it's tough to pick them out for props!

went to the 3 hour passion service today, and it was a 1500 year old chant that got me weeping.
<span style="font-style: italic">The royal banners forward go, the Cross shines forth in mystic glow
Where He, the Life, did death endure, and by that death did life procure</span>
the melody is very moving. here is the hymn sung in the original latin, Vexilla Regis, in a Catholic Church in Scotland. the rendition in my church (anglican) was much slower and sung by a choir, which just intensified the emotional impact.

wow, am assuming the anglican church is very close to the catholic, in which case it will be quite a thing during the easter mass to be hearing Hallelujah break out after so long an absence, since ash wednesday...Comment
