I ask this question because I hear men complain that they used to get beatings if they didn't want to go to church. I have been having some interesting discussions about this the last little while and I have been thinking about it.
I remember my Dad complained that his grandparents would insist he dress up in a suit and tie in all that heat and he had to stand the whole time for the LONG singing. As a result I never did either of those things to my son. He always enjoyed church, Sunday School and Bible Camp.
My Dad said that after he reached a certain age he was not forced to go to church but when he didn't go he had to learn a LONG passage of scripture and it had to be word perfect and he also had to cook the meal for the family. My ex also had to cook the meal for the family whenever he refused to go to church.
Are these some of the things that have been turning boys off to church? That and the LONG services. I must admit I do avoid Jamaican churches or if I go I go in an hour late because the service just goes on and on and on. That and de noise.
Mi jus cyan tek i'. It give mi headache.
Girls don't seem to have the same issues. Are they treated differently?
Sunday School here in Canada is made fun for the children. Is/was this not the case in Jamaica?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Finally, I think there is another reason why men don't bother with church but we'll get into that later.
