Nanook I have a question toooooooo

Puppy food.....

My new man is very fussy.

He is a blue merle chihuaua cross with yorkie.

He came with a can of vet somthing other puppy food and some eukanuba hard food.He will not eat the hard food.

I bought a different brand of canned stuff and he refuses to eat that as well. (so last night he had a scrambled egg)

So today I went to the vet and got him some of what he likes.

Now during the day he stays with my brother and he happily eats the homemade food that my bro feeds his shepherd cross dog not much of it but he seems to enjoy it.

I also want to do home cooked food for him, but the breeder said it 's not a good idea for the first year. dues to nutrients and blah blah blah.

What do you think?

I was thinking ground bison or turkey with brown rice and veggies with egg and cottage cheese. oh and liver

whats your opinion?

Not to cut into your thread to Nanook, but I wanted to say that my Mother years ago had the same breed of dog, yorkie mixed with chihuaua , it was a little spit fire. This tiny little dog could bark (almost squeak) at my 85# dog and make it stay in a corner and not move. I loved it, so deceiving by it's size. Hope you will enjoy yours.

OMG for CUTE!!!! What a little cutie! I don't usually have too much problem with puppies being fussy eaters. That usually happens here when they are older than mold.

Anyway, have you tried to soak the Eukanuba? That is excellent food. You could also try to mix a small amount of canned in with the soaked food. When he is growing I would try to get him to eat mostly commercial food such as eukanuba because they have specific formulas designed to ensure proper growth.

Try this..

scramble some egg, add dried kibble and a little bit of canned. Heck even a spoon of cottage cheese! But make the kibble be the main part. Add hot water and mix it all up and let it soak up soft then see if he will eat that!

You can make up a couple of days worth of this stuff and keep it in the fridge. For some reason the dogs really like their food warmed, so thank God for microwaves!

Canned food doesn't have enough protein all by itself so you will only want to use it to mix. If the baby doesn't love the eukanuba brand, try Wellness brand, you can find it at specialty pet stores. They have yummy stuff in it like deboned chicken and sweet potatoes!

If you can't get him to eat the commercial food you might ask your vet for a vitamin supplement.

I would really try to get him to eat the eukanuba though, or you are in for a lot of years of catering to taste whims. My Peanut had me running circles around him for years cooking him special dinners where he would sometimes eat it and sometimes turn up his nose so I'd have to cook him something else!.

I never tried soaking the kibble I did try mixing it with the canned and he just spit it out he is teething so it may just be too hard for him. will try that one.

don't know bout dogs but for our cats i've heard kibble is better for their teeth than soft food.

If he will eat the kibble soft, then you can give other things that will aid in teeth cleaning such as doggie biscuits and dental bones etc. I think getting him to eat proper food outweighs the soft food/vs kibble teeth worry.

I feed soaked kibble from the first time they eat at 4 weeks old until they're in the golden years. If they live to 14 or more, chances are they won't have much left for teeth no matter what you feed.

Speaking of which, they also have dog toothpaste and tooth brush. If you get them used to this at a young age it will help into the golden years.

Tarter on teeth is a common toy dog problem and most will need to have it cleaned at one time or another at the vet. This involves anesthesia and the whole works so putting that off is a good goal.
