thanks for the article you posted about vaccinations. Today I took Tango for his last set of puppy shots and thanks to you I was informed enough to ensure that no potential harm came to him. The vet actually gave me the choice to do distemper and rabies together today. But I said nope no thanks I'll come back for the rabies.
maybe should have passed on the bordatella but better safe than sorry.
Now what do you know about heartworms????
they are not a problem here in the province I live in (too dry) we also don't have fleas or rats
But the Dr said if I plan to travel with him this summer I should give him the pills.....
I always give my dogs heartworm pills. It just takes one mosquito bite and they got em without the pill. One of my dogs had heartworm treatment (even after I gave him the pills) and it was very costly. Not only that but it takes alot out of the dog. I truly believe in them........Better safe than sorry. Heartworms can do a number on a dog....
I give them 12 months a year too. You would be surprised when a mosquito shows up around here even when you think its too cold for them
Way cool Tanya! I think Vets are finally coming around to the new ways. At least the good ones are. I also think that some balk and are slow to do so because of the amount of profit they make on the vaccination end of things. A 5 minute visit and the price they charge for something that costs them about a buck?
Anyway, glad to be of assistance.
I don't do heartworm meds because I just don't have mosquitoes to speak of, but I did when I lived on a lake in Minnesota and I gave the pills then. I don't know about what the rules are in Canada, but here we can get a vet's prescription and send it to a vet supply company and get them much cheaper. If I was traveling, I'd check with my vet to see if there is anything I should do as far as preventative goes, like the heartworm. That was a good example. Anyway, one should always get the test before giving the heartworm pill, as the pill can make them very ill if they happen to have the heartworm.
In Minnesota I remember finding a stray mosquito during winter too! My house was really warm with the sauna and wood stove going every day! 20 below and a mosquito in the living room!
you know what even though I complain about how expensive this vet is I do like him.
Today was just for the shots but he went through EVERYTHING that he did on the initial visit. AND he talks about everything and gives options, he tells me what the current thinking is on methods and then what he thinks. He even talks to me about the whole potty training thing. He's a awesome vet for a first time dog owner.
and best of all Tango likes him, even after he got the shot Dr W picked him up cuddled him
That is so awesome Tanya! Many of us are still wandering around aimlessly after our favorite vet moved to Tennessee 2 years ago. I have visited a few different ones since then and found one I know is good and I like him but he isn't uncle Dr. Jeff.
