I'm about to move into an apartment and drop my roommate. People deh tell mi now seh mi fi get a dog cah dem deter intruders more often than not.
They say a single mother living alone is a target...

if you really do love dogs and want one for a companion as well as a watch dog, then it is a wonderful idea!

But...

Only give a living breathing creature a home if this is something you truly want. Especially if you live in an apartment because it is a huge responsibility and it is not the same when it's not your own house. Dogs will live well into their teens these days and from the moment you take one into your life, it is you that is responsible for the rest of his.

Dogs are a lot of work. You have to exercise the dog and make sure it's medical needs are met. You need to train the dog and stimulate his mind, and give him things to do to keep him happy while you are at work, or get a day care/walking service. Certain breeds need grooming and they all need regular bathing.

On the other hand, you have a child and a gun might be a bad idea too. There are things you can do to make yourself safe that involves neither. Since you seem uncertain of the idea of a dog, we can also explore that.

I sympathize with you. I would never want to be alone without my bark alarms, but my dogs, they rule in my book!

then if it a nice neighborhood, the people that live in it do what they need to keep it that way (including watching your place, out right questioning you about your going/comings, etc.....

i have a boxer, i dont think he sheds a lot, but di current mr ilp might say otherwise.

How small? If it is too small, the robbers will just give it a kick and done. Like say Chiuahua or minPin. Great alarms but no help in the protection dept. Some terriers are pretty fiesty and have a louder bark such as Carin Terriers and Westies, yet they are still smaller. Miniature or Toy poodles are non shedding. The above need regular grooming. The short haired breeds are nice as you can bathe them yourself easy enough. Wash and wear. There is the Jack Russel but man, you are talking high energy. Actually, most of the smaller dogs are pretty high energy.

What characteristics would you like to have in a dog?

I like hyper dogs di big lazy one dem, irk mi.
I've had dogs before back home, who were well taken care of.
Dogs DO need stimulation, that's where i'm kind of shaky on because with work and soon school, He's not gonna get the attention I want him to have

I may have to go back to the books and look things over.

what about getting an alarm system in the apt like ADT?
the monthly fee will probably come less than cost of caring forf a dog on a monthly basis and you have the benefit of not having to pick up the dog poop.

I dont think the dog thing will work in an apt especially since you are working &amp; going to school soon
