Poodles

[ILP]

Anybody have experience with the breed?
more specifically...how much hair dem shed?

ilp household seriously considering one.
they just busted one of those breeder/pet farm/animal in cages all day/mill places near me.

they got 224 dogs.
most are poodles/poodle mixes/terriers/terrier mixes
45 had to be put down
the rest have been taken to spca's in the area.
they range in age from 6 weeks to 2 years from what the vets can determine.

how does the breed get along with boxers?

Standard poodle? They're great and even like to run.

They don't shed and make good pets.

I considered them at one point and would NEVER give them that foo-foo grooming thing

Hey ILP...a few thingsI can tell you.

Poodles do not shed. They have hair instead of fur. Hair means it will grow and grow just like our hair and needs to be trimmed regularly, every couple of months at least. If you do keep them groomed it is easy to do the upkeep but if let go into a matted state then the only recourse is to shave it off rather than torture the dog.

Now, about the puppy mill thing. How to gently put this...while I am very much in favor of animal rescue (I have a rescue Doberman and cat), there are also things to know about breed specific inherited diseases within the breeds themselves.

Some breeds have bad hips, some have eye problems and the list goes on. Now, a good reputable breeder goes through with testing for genetic faults within the lines they are producing. This insures that you do not end up with a vet bill on paws.

Puppy mill breeders and most backyard breeders do not do this testing to insure that the dogs they produce are healthy.

Often times the dogs that come from these situations have serious behaviour problems as well because they are not properly brought up from a young age. A dogs whole perception is mapped out from the ages of 5 weeks to around 12 weeks and if those important weeks of there life is a mess, it is likely that the dog will have behavior problems.

Ok, now...behavior problems can be corrected for the most part if the new owner is diligent. Many of the health related problems can be corrected also. But one must go into an endeavor such as this with open eyes.

Your wanting to do something to help these dogs is commendable. Maybe you can find one that is young enough if you still want to help. One word of caution...in toy breeds and terriers it is very hard to housetrain if not started at an early age.

Please don't take all of this to say I am against rescue! I'm about to take my rescue Dobergirl and go do some errands this afternoon! It is just that you do need to proceed with caution and your eyes wide open.

She is my first Poodle and not my last, I am hooked. They are the second smartest breed, right behind the Border Collie. I've been caring for her breeders dogs for about the past ten years and all of them were great pets!

you can do a basic poodle trim where they dont look 'fancy' - that is what I do with Clancy. He is currently sporting a low mohawk

ILP you did not mention what type of poodle you were looking at.

Poodles are very smart, very clever, very high energy so would do well with running.

Ha Chi, too funny. The foo foo do is for show, and nobody in their right mind would do this for any other reason..(it's a part time job, i know cause I'm doing it!)

BUT! It does have it's origin with a lick of common sense!

The first Poodles were the Standard variety. They were bred as retriever hunting dogs. Many of them still perform the task.

The &quot;foo foo&quot; haircut was devised to protect their joints from the cold water.

Hip poms to protect the hip joints, wrist bracelets to protect the wrist bones and the big &quot;jacket&quot; hair on the chest to keep them warm.

Nowadays, the Poodle show coat is a huge hair game for real. my girl is growing out her coat and in a few months she will hit the road and go do her shows...

She has about 6 more inches of hair to grow before she hits the road.

Nanook thanks for the word of caution about rescue dogs.
my boxer (Evander) is a rescue, he came home with us at 8 weeks (a pet store victim).

didnt know about the fur/hair thing with the poodle. maybe that will be my selling point with di current mr ilp (he HATES the taking the dog to the groomer thing...he says it's feminine )

and about the poodle is the second smartest breed after collie ..... mi not gwine carreck aneddah smaddy....dem is di smartest aftah di BOXER.....get it.....BOXER

like di running pawt
the dogs that were rescued are poodles (i will assume standard) and then poodle mixes.
not considering the terrier/terrier mixes.

Hey ILP, a poodle would prolly be a good mix with your Boxer. There are 3 Boxers, 2 miniture poodles, a toy poodle and a standard poodle in daycare at the grooming shop (and a whole mess of others too, lol). They all get along well!

Paris is not allowed to mingle with the commoners in the day care room though! Only cause they might ruin her hair, which I have no intention of starting over AGAIN after messing up with the puppy hair.

now that i think of it, my people dem have one poodle mix dung ah yaad.
a poodle mix wid...mi nuh know...
aye sah...what a dog caniving and love be inna mix up wid di bigger dogs.
ahn im love hump tings....

but oonu right, im love to run and tings.
im only seem to behave when i take him running with me.
