Some of you might remember the story about the dogs in my yard that was the start of a feud I am having with my neighbor.
Ok, my neighbor adopted 2 stray dogs that she feeds, one male and one female. She doesn't care for them but she does feed them. Along with her 2 dogs, comes on occasion a 3rd dog who resembles the male dog that belongs to my neighbor. Because he looks like family to her dog, I gave this dog the name Family. To my knowledge it's the only name he knows. And yes he knows it.
Soooo, my neighbor's female dog was in heat again a couple of months ago. Soooo all the neighborhood dogs come to breed her along with Family, who from what I saw got his fair share.
With the breeding comes male dogs fighting. Family has fought off many dogs for the rights to the b!tch in heat. He also suffered many bites and deep wounds.
Now the b!tch is prego, so the noise and fighting has calmed down, but Family has been left with huge holes in his head where the flesh was torn.
This comes at a bad time for me, since I am the person who all of my friends call to come take care of sick or wounded dogs. I have never denied an animal assistance, if I can help. Never.
But my landlord has said he wants NO dogs in this yard and has insisted that if my neighbor doesn't get rid of the dogs, she must move. OK, so now I stay out of the dog biz in my yard completely. I don't want that threat on my head, so I stay clear of the whole deal.
But Family has gotten increasingly sicker and the wounds on his head have left a large open gap, where you can see right past the skull bones and into his head. There has been blood and puss all over our yard. We have tried to make him go some where else, after all he doesn't come from our yard, it appeared that someone used to feed him, since he once was so strong and fierce that most dogs feared him. But he seems to be coming to our yard to die.
So recently after watching him grow sicker by the day and the holes in his head growing larger, I decided to do what I could. He always like me, would come 'touch me' with his nose, so it would be me to try a thing with him. Well my attempt to lure him with food, worked until I started to pour peroxide on his wound. That was it, He was gone light lightening.
I remembered hearing on TVJ that the govt has a commitment to eradicate screwworm here in Jamaican and I spoke to my 'other' neighbor (she does not own the other 2 dogs) about it and she decided to call the local Govt agency in Sav la mar and ask for their assistance.
As I returned from my afternoon swim today a truck pulled up in the driveway. It was the Screwworm man from the Govt agency.
This man has a heart of gold. Trust me. With my assistance he tied a rope around Family, who took shelter in our laundry room and was trapped inside. Once the rope was on him, I pulled him out and the gentleman, Mr Foster started pulling screwworms out of this dogs head. Family was very uncomfortable at first, but then relaxed for about 15 minutes while he continued to clean out the worms. Then Mr Foster dug deeper, Family stood up on his weak legs and broke off the old rope.
While Mr Foster was cleaning Family, my other neighbor over the wall made a comment that Family belonged to a man who lived up a lane close to my house.
So with Family gone, Mr Foster and myself went searching for Skip the owner of this dog.
After I made several phone calls to people who know Skip (who I didn't think I knew) Skip finally arrived at his yard, where Mr Foster and I were waiting.
At first Skip told Mr Foster to catch Family and kill him. He said Family has come to his yard several times since he has the hole in his head but Skip couldn't manage him to help him. Mr Foster said that in his opinion Family could heal and since Skip has owned him since he was a puppy he should at least try. Skip agreed.
So where it stands now, we have left our laundry room door open for Family to enter. When he does we will trap him inside and call Skip. Mr Foster has agreed to come to Skips yard on several occasions, show Skip how to treat the wounds and give him all the medication he needs to do it.
This is a service that is offered FREE in Jamaica. Mr Foster and I spoke a good long while, discussing not only Family but other animals that are in need of care.
I just want to say that more people need to know that this service exists and it took only one phone call to get Mr Foster to our yard. Not only that but he came twice today. The first time he arrived Family was not to be found. Then he returned later in the afternoon to care for his dog.
I am an avid animal lover and have been blessed in my lifetime to care for / save the lives of many dogs here in Jamaica. Today I was blessed to meet yet another soul, Mr Foster, who loves with his heart animals and is more then willing to go the extra mile.
God bless him.
God bless Family, who I would love to visit often in his own yard, once he is healthy again.
I will post pictures of Family when he is better. We have all seen the ugly of sickly dogs in Jamaica, this is why I won't post a picture of him now.
