SELDEN, N.Y. — A woman, 43, faces several animal cruelty charges after the corpses of at least 20 animals were found in black plastic bags buried in a backyard over the weekend, a CBS affiliate in New York reported Monday.
The Selden, N.Y., home of Sharon McDonough was searched after investigators received a tip. Inside the house, police found a number of dogs that had been forced to live in small cages without food or water. They also discovered a cat, a hamster and a parakeet.
But it was in the backyard where they found the carcasses of a dozen other animals, according to CBS 2. All the animals were believed to have been tortured to death.
"It looked like a real murder scene, as if they were gonna pull out dead bodies out there," McDonough's neighbour Andrea Martinez told the news station.
"The smell was unbearable. They were taking bags out by the dozen. It was crazy."
McDonough's eldest son, Douglas, was allegedly the one who contacted police.
"It was a concentration camp for the animals," he said. "And my sisters and me, we got the end of it, too."
Police were now investigating whether these animal cemetery is related to a number of missing pets in the area, according to CBS 2. The TV station said police were also looking at pressing additional felony charges against McDonough.
Selden is on Long Island, 100 kilometres east of New York.
