alrite, FIRST time in this forum EVER but I have a dog question believe it or not.

and dont none of u expect me to read anything else in here except my own post cause this will be the first and only time u find me in here

question: what are the names of various breeds that you feel or know are good around small children while they are growing up? You know not too quick to be jealous, protective of those they bond with etc.?

Golden retriever, standard poodle come to mind. Also, supervision no matter what breed is chosen. There are hundreds of breeds to choose from and most would be good with children given they were properly socialized and supervised/trained. It's all up to the parents.

I think golden retrievers are pretty dogs (for what that is worth) but I dont have a clue otherwise. Mister mentioned a type of dog whose name alludes me at the moment...some type of boxer maybe...but he said they are good with kids in general.

I know you can socialize most dogs to be kid-friendly but I did have the understanding that some have better temperments than others to work with. I guess that is what I have mind. Like for example, no one could convince me to have a pit bull around my kids no matter how well they are trained.

That is where it gets to your own comfort zone because as one who has had Dobermans since 1974, I wandered around a rest home today with my old Rosebud the Dobergirl and my standard poodle Paris and they were both a big hit! More people seemed intrigued with Rosebud though.

People who were half blind and wobbly were all over my Dobergirl and asking what kind of dog she was. I repeatedly heard "oh, I've never pet a Doberman before".

Many kids have grown up under the tutelage of my Dobermans! I know you used Pit Bulll as example but back in the 1970's when I first started out with my Dobies, the same conversations took place only insert "pitbull" in these times.

As long as I'm at it, the surroundings of where the dog comes from is also a huge factor. Home raised puppies where children reside and interact are desirable resources for a puppy in a situation where they will live with young children. And the breeder should help acclimate the children as to how to best interact with the new puppy.

okay thanks. Good advice

the plan is to have a puppy when the kid thing comes along so that they can grow up together. But I'd want the child in the house first and then add a puppy a short while after so they can bond well.

some people like boxers, other like standard poodles

also remember that having a dog is like having a permanent toddler at times with respect to exercise, play and the feeding so you have to be aware.

I dont like dogs that shed as I am sensitive to their dander so a golden retriever would not be on my list but there are plenty people who love their fur shedding retrievers.

Nookie, are Golden Retrievers and Labradors in the same family. I was going to suggest a Lab I know they are gentle dogs and really good with kids.

definitely do the child first because a dog is a lot of work

i had the dog before the baby - jealously abounded

one day i found the dog sitting in the high chair

after i became a single mother - i couldn't take the dog for a walk and leave the baby alone in the house - so the dog got adopted

i just adopted a 4-year old black lab - she thinks she's a lap dog - very gentle and protective - but big enough so folks don't take a chance bothering us

Mister says that Retreivers have some type of genetic defect that makes them get fat easily later in life. I tihnk that is what he said....so vet bills is something we have to consider. Plus he thinks they are great for kids but not so good at "protection", ie, they are so friendly they would lick an intruder to death

I am a logistical planner So the discussion is kid first and have an idea of the type of dog to grow up with the child by time kid rolls around. I want both of them (kid n puppy) to be little together.

We discussed the training etc. cause I am not going to be the one getting up in the middle of the night to deal with a child and a puppy So the logistics of all of that has been planned

It's funny cause both of us are <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> pet people at all but he really would like a dog for protection of his family while he is away. And like me believes it is good for a child to have a constant companion/protector who would alert us to anything happening with a child.

Retrievers, and labs, though I love them for their wonderful family tolerant attitude, shed copious amounts of hair.

Standard Poodle gets my vote! I think they make a good choice for a first dog. The do not shed and they are great watch dogs. They were the original poodle. The smaller ones were bred down from the standards, and they were bred for hunting. I can put you in touch with my breeder, who does the genetic testing and only breeds sound animals which are bred with the intent of show dogs, meaning they are not only structurally sound, but drop dead gorgeous dogs and bred to perform so they have the needed brains.

This is Paris's uncle. This dog is a AKC Champion plus it has hunting trial title and he is a companion extraordinaire. he is somewhere up in Canada, but I forget where.

you know when he brought it up that was EXACTLY my first response

but then I had to admit that the dog thing was floating around in the back of my mind too. As much as I may not be a pet person, I do think it is sweet when I see a dog and child that are glued to each other like BFFs

His thing is security systems cant follow your kid around in the back yard or anywhere else when they are outside. That is what he has in mind.

That's why you need a Standard Poodle. I love mine. Now my lifelong friend is sold after knowing Paris and she is picking up his uncle next week! No shed!
