I've been told that female dogs menstruate and that it can be messy. I've never had a female dog but I have been offered one and I don't know what to expect.
If you have had a female dog, please tell me about this.
There is a remedy for this and it is called Spay. It is useless to go through the mess if you are not going to breed your dog, which, unless you have done your homework you should never do. Estrus cycle lasts around 21 days, though I have known dogs to go as long as 40 days. yes, 40 days and that is twice a year!
Spaying is a must in these times. The other down side of not spaying is that when your dogs does come into "season", every loose male within miles will be on your doorstep and you are almost guaranteed an accident, puppies on the way and no homes planned for when they arrive not to mention complications and the mess.
If you like the dog you are offered, take her, and make an appointment to have her spayed ASAP.
More about spaying...
You do not ever want spay a dog while it is in estrus so make sure you do it ahead of time. The chances of the dog bleeding out are great during estrus. I actually lost a dog in October while she was in season because she bled out. it was horrifying to live though, I was helpless to so anything for her except try to keep her strong, but the bleeding won out.

Actually, you can't just use a kotex, it has to be attached somehow. This cute little number would do the trick...
