Humane society VS Rescue Groups.

I look at adoptable pets on line. (I REALLY want another dog but can't do it right now)

From what I see one line it looks like rescue groups may have more info about the dogs temperment and possible issues. But, it looks like some of them may be a bit more of hassle to adopt from.

Any thoughts?

The rescue groups usually have the dogs in foster homes so more is learned about their temperaments and a host of other things such as if they like other animals or children, some do not like men, you get the idea...and they are worked with as far as training and manners and such.

And yes, more than likely more hoops to jump through. It's all good though. They are just trying to do what is best for the animal and sometimes even if there are seemingly iron clad regulations, they sometimes get bent after getting to know a person better. Things such as Minnesota Doberman rescue requires a fenced in yard. I do not have one but Rosebud has been safely guarding my yard for almost 7 years now.

I'm probably going to be facing a similar interrogation as I am looking at adopting a Persian kitten that was seized recently and is in a foster home at the moment. I could get turned down because of the dogs, but my dogs LOVE cats.

I got my girl from a rescue, so was able to get lots of info about her in advance; as well as go to meet her in her normal surroundings (as opposed to a cage).

Most rescues are run by volunteers, and the ones I know about in my area, like Nanook says, are being fostered in peoples' homes, so the bonus is you will know what their temperament is towards other animals, children, special needs, housetraining etc.

To me it is a definite plus - I've looked at some through Humane Society and their supporting pet stores, and chances are slim to find a good match for size or breed you desire, knowledge of behaviour (good/bad).

I would definitely recommend rescue groups, and will adopt from them again...

It sounds like rescue groups are the way to go.

Becoming a volunteer for a rescue group might be a good way to go. You would get inside information on prospects and provide a valuable service at the same time. Perhaps try fostering, or walking dogs..or helping with fund raisers.

We've had three dogs over the past 17 years, two from the SPCA and one from a rescue. The first SPCA dog was with us for 14 years and he was a gem The second one, another gem, was with us for only a year but she had cancer . With our current dog, I went with a rescue for the first time. The dog was crate and house trained. I met his his rescuer and she inspected our house and yard, called our vet, and followed up with us for about 3 months. He's a sweetie and so was his rescuer

Other good points with some rescues is that they will ensure certain shots are given; and some will allow a trial period - ie one week, to see that the animal and new home/owner are a good match.

and have always offered if anything happens to be able take the animal if you can no longer care for it

I'm a foster mom for a rescue here in the Atlanta area. I've had several fosters, 2 I adopted and this one I am hoping will find a forever home soon.

Since most foster dogs come from abused or abandoned situations, they come stressed and we make every effort to make them a family member so that they are loved and know true human companionship. Here in GA some people are overly abusive to dogs and cats (especially dogs) and most have never seen the inside of a house or know true love from a human.
But they are forgiving and show love when love is given in return.


I agree that a rescue is the way to go, but make sure you research several rescues first. I had a bad experience with the first rescue I became involved with down here in Ga when I found out the person was asking for donatioons for dogs she didn't even have or even rescue.
